It's clear from everything after Terminator 2 that James Cameron is the only one that can make a good Terminator movie. Hes got all his eggs invested in the Avatar basket so I assume he's not interested.
Arnold's only getting older and the reasons for shoehornIng him in the plot are getting increasingly ridiculous (Dark Fate was the worst offender of this). Without those 2 it just doesn't seem to work

It retroactively invalidated everything the first two films were. That's the worst thing a sequel can possibly do: make the originals worse.

I'll take Salvation over most of the other Terminator movies. It's like the games.

So

I'd go back to 3, with the aim of reviving the ideas of 1 with a bit of an IT flair

You like T2? I like Abrams Star Trek or Transformers or Nolan.

Pretty movies

This - it felt like the whole theme of T2 (No fate but what we make) was really invalidated (more so than in the other sequels)

I enjoyed seeing the different direction Salvation appeared to be taking (a splinter of Skynet that was very unknown) - iirc even the trailer had Connor saying "You are nothing like what my mother warned me about"

Even Genesys (the first half at least) tried to do something different with diverging timelines...

T3 directly spat in the face of "there is no fate but what we make" by having Arnold literally say "you only postponed (Judgement Day). It was inevitable" and even 13 year old me HATED it. Some of the dialog is iffy at best "you remind me of my MOTHER" and it just shouldn't have been a direct sequel

Salvation was just underwhelming to me. I can applaud them trying something different but it's definitely in the bottom tier for me. Felt like a discount Mad Max at times and just not very Terminator-like.

Genesys started off on the right foot like someone else said. But by Act 3 it goes off the rails a little. Not to mention there's key plot details they purposely didn't answer because they were banking on a sequel...that we're never gonna get. This was just dumb. And Jai Courtney is a charisma black hole who is a main character that drives the narrative.

Dark Fate felt like a soul-less retreading of T2. The evil Terminator is still a cop, but he's a Mexican border patrol agent who can order airstrikes on people >_>. Instead of a computer program called Skynet its an AI program called Legion (seriously guys it's the same fucking thing, and the movie goes out of its way to try and say they're different)

The thing is T2 was the finale. It wasnt a trilogy setup it closed the story. The only story that accepted that was the game Terminator Resistance which was a prequel set in the future war.

The only things that really didn't work in Salvation were Helena Bonham Carter's ultimate role in the movie and some of the CGI used for the harvester robots. But I'm nitpicking. The movie has otherwise amazing CGI and her character fixes a few things. Worthington had a great character too. Great way to bring a character from the past into the present for a change, and do the body horror again with some new emotions. It's a great piece for setting up a truer Future War film.

Going back to T3 though, I've been talking about Shin Godzilla and I just can't shake the idea that a good T3 might look something like that. Shots that look like they came out of a news program with dashcam footage. The Terminator is an evil cop. But IMAX

I just think the Terminator movies don't have enough of a story world/lore for it to act as a franchise. There's only so much people could watch again about Skynet, machines, John connor and some different variations of T-1000. T2 was the peak and everything else seem like b-grade knock offs and retreads

The funniest thing about Dark Fate is they could have gone really out there with a new AI run future. We're so reliant on machines already they wouldn't even need to use nuclear weapons to take over.

But all they did was do the same thing with different names.

He would of been the good guy in the original if he didn't demand to play the Terminator. Originally he was coasted to play Reese because they wanted the Terminator to have the every man look to better blend into a crowd.

He auditioned for both but Cameron was dead set on making him play the terminator. It was his acting debut and he really did not want to debut as an antagonist. He basically got predator arranged ASAP after the movie because of this and then T2 came later.

That's a good thought - iirc in T2 extended the learning toggle had to be activated manually so it seems they'd be completely independent/hardened against outside transmissions

This raises an interesting question - 1000 was very revolutionary concept from the first terminator in terms of visual presentation and make up to the audience... is there anything that could be the same leap from T1000? The nanites from Genisys seem kind of close in that they more like nanobot bacterial assemblers (like in Michael Crichton's Prey).

The only thing that could've worked were more prequels/stuff about the war. Maybe some soft retcons in there to make it interesting. The constant time travel made it too messy. They shouldve closed that loop with T2.

The problem with that is they would've needed to stand on their own as good movies. Instead we got what we got.

How about a movie like Halloween or Invisible man where it's just the T1000 by itself in the style of the first movie, without Schwarzenegger, using maybe a digitally deaged Robert Patrick (the guy who played the original T1000) or you could even cast him in the lead as a kind of Kyle Reese from the future who has been sent to the past against another T1000, or a team of T800s, or a new robot. Don't they make movies like that, and they're successful?
