Since the sites forcing folks to effectively change to a new username, will they also be freeing up inactive (like hasnt been logged into in years) / older banned usernames ?

Anyone with a username that contains spaces (which they stopped allowing to be made like 15+ years ago) is being forced to change it or have it automatically changed to the same name with underscores replacing the spaces

Because something with merging database information

Imagine an Admin willingly inflicting underscores on his user base. The man truly doesnt care about us.

According to the PM they sent to users with spaces, they'll consider clearing old inactive accounts if you wanna take their name. Still waiting to see about my name change since the name I wanna snag has zero karma and hasn't been logged in since it was created like 3 years ago.

Greetings, long time GameFAQs user!

Due to the merging of three completely different systems over the last twenty-five years (contributors, message boards, and the universal login system), users could have up to three different usernames, each with different rules and standards for how those names could be constructed. However, in the next few months, GameFAQs will be moving to a brand new authentication provider, and in the process of this change we'll be reducing the number of user names associated with an account to one. You are one of the last 4,837 users who have more than one account name, and we'd like to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Although spaces in names will no longer be allowed (as these have caused a myriad of issues for years), we are extending the possible length of a user name to 20 characters indefinitely for legacy users. We understand that for some of you this will be an imposition, but we want to make sure you get to use the user name (or names) you want on the site.

Your current site name is The_Popo - this name is used for Answers, Private Messages, My Games, logging in, and all other activities except the Mesage Boards and Contributions.
Your current message board name is The Popo - this name is only used on the Message Boards.
Based on your current user names, these account names are currently available:

• _Popo

Due to their inactivity, these account names may be available to you as well, pending review:

• Popo

However, these are just suggestions; you can change your account name to any valid and available name you want.

If you have the time, please visit our user name change request form located at https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/feedback?type=44 and select a single name you'd like to use across the entire site (including Boards and Contributions). While you will no longer be able to use spaces, you can select any other available name up to 20 characters long as long as it meets our current naming guidelines (consisting of alphanumeric characters, numbers, dashes, and underscores). If you have a more complicated request (including splitting off or anonymizing contributions), please use that same form and provide a detailed explanation of what you want to do. I wonder if this is an indefinite offer. I'd like to save a name change for a rainy day.

As a web developer myself, I'm curious why name spaces have caused issues for the site after all this time.

space account users should at least have a little something on their profile letting everyone know that they were one of the last five thousand or so if the wording of the pm is to be believed

I dont know how often it happens anymore, but I know there have been times in the past where karma bonuses were handed out as well.
