I concur, they hit all the right nostalgia beats and honored the original Opening Theme IMO.

The part that made me geek out was when they cut from Bebop's monster truck on the bridge to a fight with a Triceraton.

That's a reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project in which a Triceraton appeared on the cover but wasn't in the actual game. The monster truck was used by Bebop on the bridge level of the game. So there's the direct tie-in to that game.

"Unlike some other Ninja Turtles games, we include the characters we say are going to be there."

The little robots stunlocking you with electric whips is right out of TMNT II: The Arcade Game
And the overworld is clearly an homage to TMNT NES (screw that game, though)

It's more difficult than it has any right to be, but it's a fun game otherwise.

It's not that it's too difficult overall but that there's specific instances (the dam level) where the difficulty and the punishment for failure is unreasonable relative to the rest of the game.

Yeah. The biggest flaw in the game is that they don't refill your health after you complete a level. With trial and error, you can learn the pizza locations. But even then, you're talking about making multiple trips to refill health to all of the Turtles. The health replenishment in the final stage is halfway through the level and there's no exit - so that one you unavoidably must have healthy Turtles in reserve if you hope to make it through.

The difficulty spikes tremendously in the second half of the game. It's ultimately unnecessary because you're already looking at one of the biggest games on the NES. If the difficulty never went beyond what it was in the third stage, you're still looking at two to three weeks of gameplay before any kid is likely to beat it.

I was trying to hold out for the cowabunga collection, but this has been a blast so far. Mikey is my favorite, but splinter in this is rad af.
