well it's pretty clear that this test is not particularly concerned about colloquialisms, regional phrases, or even any reatively recent terms. I don't want to say it's "literary" vocab since that doesn't sound quite right either but a lot of the words here are things I could basically never imagine people actually using when talking but I know because I've read books that have them

not like you really need a gigantic vocabulary for everyday use anyway. I'm pretty sure the only time I'd ever use "abscond" would be to specifically make humour out of the obscurity of the word choice rather than for its actual meaning

A lot of more complex and uncommon words main value really comes in for historical documents and older literature really or in certain very well educated niches. And many uncommon words themselves are almost inherently niche such as many scientific terms that are not likely be meaningful to people outside their designated profession.

This got difficult at the end, I'd say a good 4-5 of them I just flat out guessed and never heard of the word.

Every time I hear or read a new word I look up its spelling, meaning, and etymological roots.

This is generally what I try to do. I read a lot as a kid, and even if I didn't know what the word meant, I knew the context in which it was used. I had to look up a few of these words to see what they meant, because I hadn't read them before, or didn't know what they meant without context.

My perfunctory pontifications are predicated on my pedantically verbose mother, who was an English teacher.

it's weird, i don't think this scoring algorithm is totally deterministic. I took it again and gave the same answers as before and it gave me a slightly different score.

Anyway, I got 22,720 which is top 5.47% I must have got the ones I guessed on from never hearing them before wrong then since I swear it seemed like I was doing pretty good. I thought my score would have been a little higher.

I find it weird that everyone got either 22 or 23k something or 29 or 30k. Like no one here at all got anything from 24 to 28k?

what would be the point of bragging on here tho? I believe it cause my answer was honest. I was in bed when I did it. if you're a native english speaker with a college education (most of CE) I don't think it's that unbelievable to get a decent score

I had never seen the word avulse before, but I think I got everything else. I've always had a pretty big vocab and I am a lawyer now and there were several legal terms and archaic words in there. Just don't ask me to do math or any science that involves math, if you count that, there's a lot of people who know more than me. That's why I don't count that witchcraft.

more likely than anything, the underlying criteria of what constitutes top whatever % is flawed, not that people are mostly cheating

there's also the process of elimination thing with some questions that makes it easier to get the right answer

English is not my first language. Interestingly enough, I did it afterwards in my native tongue and got a higher score in English. This despite getting 0.01% in both tests.

This is a shit test. You only get to choose one synonym or one antonym. It means nothing. The antonym for normal was full of borderline r worded choices that no one in academia would have ever chosen.
