My personality philosophy was already pretty much this before I even learned what stoicism was.

I have encountered this many times, checked the definition, and forgotten it every time. Can you sum it up in a sentence or two?

...You will probably like isekai anime. It usually features a protagonist who is the only person who can do a specific thing.

Actual stoicism, or delusional and privileged apathy dressed up as something deeper?

where are you learning

I'm not learning and applying stoicism. I'm reading about it and realizing that this is pretty much me. I haven't changed at all. Right now I'm reading Meditations by marcus aurelius.

You guys get so defensive at someone on the internet posting something that has no relevance to you lol

That's pretty much my Bible. I try to find inner happiness and contentment. Such a good book to help me reflect on that.

Im about halfway done with it.

Again it's just interesting to me cuz this is just how I was raised and it's how my dad and my grandfather is. But they have no clue what stoicism is. I'm just finding that there's so much overlap and I'm agreeing with most things I'm reading.

And something else I like about it is that you're not required to be religious or a certain religion. It's more of a way of life.

I definitely ascribe a large portion of my resilience to stoic ideology. Its also progressed that Im getting further and further into asceticism, not in a deprivation sense, or fetishizing hardship, but learning to be more discerning about what I actually NEED to be happy, and its really just not much. Although, there is something to be said for approaching adversity more in the sense of, ok Im gonna appreciate what this will reveal about who I am as a person than with dread or reluctance.

I think the most valuable lesson in stoicism, which is really a philosophy about letting go, is to learn to let go of ones own ego. This extricating of the self, so to speak, I believe really allows one to get a birds eye view of their place in their community / society / civilization / species / reality. If one attempts to do this while strongly attached to their own ego, they will feel belittled by the scope of things beyond their control; however, if one is unattached, they will see that all things exist as a singular multitude, and I think that fosters a degree of empathy and unity that emboldens persons to act with sincere compassion and humility. If that is the case, their behavior will always be interpreted as benevolent.
