I liked the team concept, but the game's level designs were nothing to win awards over.

It's impressive and also makes a lot of sense if it's true...because most of the levels suffer from the same design flaws as one another. Awkward camera angles, frustrating rail grinding segments, and platforms with no guard-rails...which is frustrating when several of the game's attacks force your character to move forward at high speeds and launch straight off the edge.

I mean the levels werent that bad

Its more the fact that you had to play through them 4 times with barely any variation outside of Team Chaotix missions to get the true ending

They were passable at best, and horrendous at worst. Most of them were just a series of flat platforms with damage-sponge enemies. They were tedious, and the amount of time it took to kill the enemies made it that much more likely for poor level design to result in a cheap death eventually. Which made replaying the level over again feel terrible.
