If your memory is not continuous then its not fundamentally different, so I fail to see the point unless you also adopt the belief of working your way up the chain based on karma or something.

In journey to the west. You are judged by the underworld King. And if you didn't do anything bad enough to be tortured in the one of the 18 levels of hell, you walk the bridge to be reincarnated. The grandma there gives you the soup that you have to drink to erase your memory and then you enter one of the tunnels to be reincarnated. One of the tunnels is called creature tunnel. If you were a bad person the previous life, you may be ordered to be reincarnated as livestock or something.

Pretty cool novel that. Journey to the west is the story with sun wukong in. There are books of life and death in the underworld. They record everyone's lives, their fates, the time and cause of death etc. Sun wukong fought his way into hell and erased his name off the books making himself extra immortal.

If you mean, reincarnation, then what does it matter? Every new cycle, you're scrubbed completely of all your memories, your personality, sense of self, and start over as a blank slate in whatever circumstance you land in. As far as I'm concerned, that's functionally no different than an atheists belief that we're just gone. After all, after I'm gone, everything I am or ever was is completely obliterated. How is that any different than complete erasure? Even if it is true, it would make no difference.

I used to, when I was into paganism. Its a nice idea but unlikely to be true

Reincarceration for what?

Maybe if the universe collapses, is reborn, and collapses again infinitely then reincarnation could be possible at the molecular level. Even if the number of universes between the moments of one's existence are an unfathomably large, perhaps near infinite number, from the perspective of their awareness that still passes in an instant, even if memories aren't retained.

Maybe I'm just hopeful because I'm happy to exist even if I wouldn't keep my old memories. I don't remember being in the womb or many of my childhood days, but that doesn't mean I didn't exist then or don't exist now.

I think about it this way.

Whatever atoms make up your body wont just disappear after you die. It will be consumed by the planet via the animals or the plants. Eventually ending up in many many different life forms. And that cycle continues forever.
