To capture the whole country and annex it?
To capture the whole country and make it a Russian puppet?
To capture only some territories (east of Dnieper River?)
To capture only the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk?
Ensuring constant conflict until the end of time to ensure the Ukraine never joins NATO?
To bring back the old borders of the Soviet Union?

Going by Putin's speech earlier, to completely erase all trace of Ukraine as a country and culture and establish total Russian control over the Black Sea.

control Ukraine as a puppet state, keep a protracted border crisis with EU.

Carry on until US decides to turn their full attention to the South China Sea

Destroy the Ukraine enough that NATO membership is out of the question, and potentially increase their sphere of influence

Putin totally wants those juicy Soviet Union borders back (or as close as he can get to them without actually harming US assets)

Sorry, my native language isn't English. I don't know in detail how to refer to every country correctly. I assume "Ukraine" is correct then.
NATO expansion into Ukraine is quite clearly a major reason that this conflict started in the first place. Putin said as much back in 2008.

Yeah. NATO announced after the Bucharest summit in 2008 that they wanted Georgia and Ukraine to become members. Putin responded that Russia considered that an act of aggression. What's going on in Ukraine now is very similar to what happened in Georgia in 2008.

That doesn't absolve Putin of guilt though. But it's context that explains how the West and particularly the US bears some responsibility as well.

Yeah sovereign countries showing interest in joining an alliance to prevent being invaded by their belligerent neighbor that used to rule them makes them bear some responsibility for being invaded by said neighbor. /s
