I have never an episode but know it has a cult following.

It's fun low stakes sci-fi.

Comedy mixed with fun for the family drama

It's just fun.

Sometimes has great writing, sometimes it's the worst episode of anything you've ever seen. Literally no way to know.

Though the last four years or so have been pretty ass.

This is how I felt when I watched it.

I don't know how people could be obsessed with it.

As of last year he's back doing audio stories, but he has no intention of coming back to the show itself.

After he quit they basically blacklisted him and slandered him in press, and have still never apologized.

And to make matters worse, one of the key people Eccleston had a falling out with back then has just signed on to come back as the head writer again next year, so them alone pretty much cements Eccleston not returning.

It's definitely a shame. His Doctor is super underrated and deserves more screen time.

The quote isn't 100% exact because I'm typing it off the top of my head, but Moffat said something around the 50th anniversary that I think sums up the appeal of the show:

If you want to know who people are, you look at the people the create to be their heroes. When the show started they made a character, and instead of giving him extra speed or extra strength, they gave him an extra heart so he could care more. Instead of giving him a fast car or a sleek spaceship they gave him a phone box so you can call him for help. And instead of giving him a gun they gave him a screwdriver so he can fix things.

Eccleston definitely needed another season or few specials. I really enjoyed his doctor. The only silver lining of him leaving is it getting us to Tennant.

I thought I read somewhere he was going to to be the war doctor in the Tennant/Smith crossover episode, but they couldnt get the scheduling to work. Of course, that could have just be the polite way he told them no.

That was the original idea, yeah, for the 9th Doctor to be in the anniversary, but after Eccelston turned them down they had to come up with something else, and thus the "War Doctor" was created.

Eccelston said he did read the original script, but it was too fanservicey at the time, and -- in conjunction with all I said above about his bad relationship with the BBC -- he just said no to the whole thing.
