I just noticed now. Most of the bigger cities haven't even fall. Omashu, a somewhat big city only fell during the show's timeline and that's only because bumi dont want any if his people die.

So why people fear them again? What did they accomplish in 100 years? Killing some villagers in huts and few several earh kingdom villages, at most a small town

they are the weakest benders but during the comet they can carpet bomb and scorched earth tactics any other nation and they cant really defend against it except the airbenders which is why they were destroyed first

If Aang wasn't frozen in ice, there'd have been no airbenders left. But other than that, yeah

They genocided one of the four tribes and if it weren't for Aang and Yue they likely would have completely fucked the planet thanks to Zhao killing the moon spirit.

Not to mention that they captured or killed all of the southern water tribe's benders aside from Katara and Hama.

The Fire Nation had been fucking shit up. Katara was the only bender in her tribe while their military was off fighting.

The Air Nomads were entirely fucked.

It was basically just the Earth Kingdom putting up a fight and still losing a war of attrition.

yeah they wiped out unprepared, bunch of pacifist monk and by the look of the room gyatzo is in, he put down fire soldier by the dozen alone.

Also southern water tribe are barely a city, just few dozen people living in igloos in not defenseable area.

I guess it's mostly politics, but if central goverment of earth nation managed to recruit able bodied soldier from their states, they could launch attack on fire nation and fire nation would be decimated.

It's probably because earth kingdom is so varied and each area have great deal of indepence, so it's hard to unite them.

Because the fire nation had been systematically attacking it and wiping out their benders for years. As far as we know they could have been just as big as the northern water tribe before then.

my first time watching the show, the show says the 'war' has been going on for a hundred years with the fire nation on top of things

but i'm guessing the fire nation didn't really hold much territory, just drained them dry for resources/weaponry or destroyed dangerous groups/tactical areas

and finally Azula shows up

My theory is that they actually suffered unexpected and pretty great losses when they wiped out the Air Nomads.

Some clever airbenders could've burned a shitload of them alive amplifying a poorly aimed and already amplified blast with their air bending.

Sure the airbenders were pacifists but try telling parents to be pacfistic as the fire nation tries to immolate their children...

Sudden technological advancements like the tanks and airships is what allowed them to push forward. The few big cities being surrounded by and literally made of their respective elements proved to be amazing defense until technology found a way.

Yeah, the idiots in earth kingdom are what allowed the fire nation to have advanced beyond anyone else.

I guess their war plan is basically "take the dangerous groups benders first, then hope the rest of the world doesn't get their shit together (which they didn't lol) and fight back, then wait 100 years for the next comet"

It wasn't so much about dangerous groups as it was about removing the Avatar from the equation. That's why they wiped out the Air Nomads and spend the next century focusing on the Water Tribes as it was the next element in the cycle.

I don't think they were strictly pacifist monks either TBH. They reflect on it in Korra, but they were nomads and their temples were just bases of operation and training facilities. They travelled the world offer guidance and help and no doubt used their bending to fight and protect the weak.

Because most the of the world is people living in huts?
And said people in huts have magic powers that can wreck armies?
