What FPS has held up the best by modern standards?

I'm including Descent because there's basically no genre they fit into

I picked Unreal based on the sheer hours I sunk into it. It's most likely Half Life in a sense of the bar it set.

No question it is Doom. You wouldn't have Duke Nukem or Wolfenstein without Doom.

That's what I was going to say, I thought that was a 90s game and I liked it over GoldenEye.

I'll just vote for GoldenEye though

Answering doom, but man do I love me some Descent. I know a lot of people don't like the 6DOF thing but it was a lot of fun to maneuver around, and it allowed for some really creative level design. Killer soundtrack too

Overload, the modern-day successor game built by the same devs, is also excellent and worth your time if you ever liked the Descent games

I have always been very particular about the FPS games I enjoy. Out of that list Goldeneye and Duke Nukem were the only two I liked and I say Goldeneye is better than Duke Nukem

Doom 2's level design holds it back.
Enjoyed Dark Forces 2 the most back then. It still has enough variety to hold up regardless of canon status.
Descent is more dogfighter than FPS, since that's the case you can say it aged well
No room for Tribes?

Definitely Doom.

Half Life set a precedent by which shooters were judged for nearly two decades, but it itself doesn't hold up. Whereas not only does Doom hold up, but its formula still works just as well.

Doom is a good example of how simplicity executed well ages better than unrefined complexity.

Which is why the 16-bit era aged better than the N64/PSOne era.
