Conflicted characters can be amazing, or they can be frustrating; it's all down to the quality of the story and dialogue. If we care about the character, then their conflict can be gripping. If they're just unbearably dumb and make constant mistakes but are 'conflicted' then we, as audience members, struggle to support them, because we're tired of their uselessness.

On the same note, a simple character can also be the best if executed well. Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach has exactly one major motivation: "I love fighting, and you seem strong, so let's fight" and he's one of the best characters in the series. He's never conflicted and isn't complex. He just loves diving in and going ham at every opportunity, and the crowd loves that shit.

Eren's motivation wasn't particularly compelling, but tbf the author pivoted from a Gantz giant people eater ripoff to a political story halfway thru so w.e.

The main character from a comedy was funnier than an anime character from a bleak and depressing world? No way!

I find being conflicted a very relatable and human trait.
Seigfried from Soul Calibur was definitely my favorite because he was literally in a struggle with himself. Conflicted people usually make mistakes they beat themselves up over, it shows they care about something all of the time.

As far as anime is concerned though... it's hit or miss. Soul Eater was full of conflicted characters and the one the show seemed to want me to like (Maka) I hated more than absolutely every other character in the show.

Full Metal Alchemist is brimming with conflicted characters. I can't even think of a bad one from a storytelling perspective. They are driven forward by their need to persevere, or conquer their weaknesses or vulnerabilities.

It's most likely hit or miss... But when it hits, and it often does, it hits hard.
