There's an overarching plot, but it's kinda been suffering from the (book version of) A Song of Ice and Fire syndrome where there are so many named characters, so many subplots, and so many tiers of power and politics, that the whole thing drags for a loooooong time.

Fans will tell you that the overarching plot is epic and engaging, but new readers/watchers or people (like me) who dropped it partway through might say that each new arc follows roughly the same formula: "Go to new island -> Meet some locals -> Find out there's something 'off' about it -> Meet the villain's underlings -> beat them up -> set events into motion that eventually culminate in le epic final standoff with the villain and his/her heavy hitters which lasts for a loooong time -> Win, celebrate, maybe pick up a new crew mate, then go to another island to do it all again"

It's just too long for me. The pacing is too slow. The subplots and characters within each new arc usually aren't very compelling to me, compared to the main events, so even in the manga it feels like there's a ton of filler.

that's my problem exactly. each arc is the same damn thing. I appreciate that Oda gives no fucks for standard character designs, and hasn't visibly dipped in quality any time someone posts some pages, but the storytelling itself is the same arc 20 fucking times.

Oh well. At least it's not Bleach.

I love Bleach, but honestly you can skip roughly the first half of any arc and miss almost nothing important.

to be honest, it doesn't.
too many paddings killed the momentum for me, better read the manga.

It isn't worth watching.
