I am absolutely livid. Im ropable.

Hes 4 and an individual. Many of his habits and mannerisms are associated with neurodiversity and he has a particular way of seeing the world. Hes also very, very energetic.

His daycare had a bad habit of sending him home whenever he gets even slightly upset. Because he might be sick. No jackasses, its because he cant deal with changes to routine and you dont try to calm him down, you just work him up until he has a meltdown. Responding to that with sending him home and further breaking his routine is not particularly helpful. Just because they dont want to deal with him. It got to the point they were sending him home once a week until we called up and put the director on blast.

He goes to daycare on Thursdays and Fridays. Weve started noticing on Thursdays, something will be shown to him or said to him that while acceptable for little kids, can also be scary.

Some absolute jackass showed him old 80s and 90s ads for the gobbledock. When my wife picked him up, he was really upset and talking about the gobble dog who sneaks into shops and peoples houses to steal their chips.

And he goes the gobble dock steals chips and says CHIPPIES

He said that in a real Gollum voice.

He was awake until 11 last night, absolutely petrified that if he went to sleep, the gobbledock would break into the house.

Aaand theyll probably send him home early today because hes tired and could be sick. Assholes.

This is the gobbledock:

Shouldn't he go to a special daycare for that?

The daycare has plenty of children attending with additional needs. So, no. Its supposed to be an early childhood education centre, too. Not just a bunch of high school dropouts in a building with some toys.

Weve taken him to a doctor to see if we can get him some additional support like speech therapy to make sure his transition to school next year goes well, but their judgement on the matter was basically that he could be neurodiverse, or he could be just idiosyncratic. That hes very much borderline, so just wait and see.

Pretty sure using underhanded tactics to fleece us out of $100 a day is against the rules, bro. Im also pretty sure that showing stuff to little kids that scares the shit out of them is not best practice.

$100 a day. for two days a week, is $10400 a year.
Does the kid not have a grandma or retired relative available?

Oh, and if theyve decided hes sick, he cant go to daycare for 48 hrs, or until hes had sign-off from a doctor (understandable, but given the bullshit reasons they use).

S they turf him out early on a Thursday (and get the full amount for that day) and then get free $ for the next day when hes not there.

I would not trust my neighbours with my pot plants, let alone my child.

I get youre trying to help with solutions and I appreciate it, but believe me, weve thought it all out.

Wed get him into another daycare centre, but the waiting lists around here are 2+ years.

My son is still going on about the gobbledog.

Thanks, daycare assholes, hes got a new obsession.

This one is proving to be worse than his Grimace and Sirenhead fixations put together.

No disrespect, but if that's your conclusion of what the daycare is, it seems like you did a pretty poor job researching daycares before you trusted your son (who by your own admission is a borderline special needs child) with one that obviously would not be fulfilling his needs.

I can only speak from my own experiences, but my wife an I were researching day cares before she even got pregnant, to make sure the one we eventually went with was perfect for the children we would eventually have. We ended up with 4 to chose from, based on what we felt we needed to most once we had children.

My daughter ended up having 4 great years in that daycare.

We usually have to take turns taking the hit to our sick/carers leave.

So far this year Ive been working from home on Thursday or Friday so hes just home with me if hes sick.

We researched the absolute shit out of it. Its very different service now, compared to what it was like when my daughter started there 5 years ago.

It was great and we were actually lucky to get a place.

The director of the centre and about 90% of the staff left over those 5 years and the quality of the service went downhill dramatically. Replacement staff had vocational training childcare qualifications, rather than being university trained early childhood educators.

Yo, my recurring nightmare as a child was basically Grimace chasing me around my room (called Jaws in thr dream, though). Shout out to your kid's obsessions.

I like telling the story, because the last one I had was that Jaws chased me around this nice-ish building while my mom filled out the paperwork for me to stop having those kinds of dreams.

That is amazingly meta.

Funnily enough, he loves Grimace. He was in the room when a TV news segment played about Grimace being a tastebud (real hard hitting journalism) and ever since hes been obsessed with him.

Little dude is all about his obsessions. basically all his toys are monster trucks or power tools.

He literally insists on sleeping on a pile of pikachus and polar bears.
