These movies were a total bitch to find, even to buy/rent. <_<

Only ever watched the first Grudge and the Netflix series before now. Heard these were low budget, but I wasn't really prepared for just how low budget. Even still, some of these scenes were absolutely captivating and I still felt some spook.

Thing that surprised me most was how straight-forward the story was, and how "close" the viewer gets to Kayako. Grudge was largely vague with the details and left her feeling mysterious, almost tragic. Netflix series was borderline incomprehensible. Here she's overtly a yandere, and I think that obsessive aspect about her makes her appearances even more unsettling.

On a slight tangent, I don't have a lot of experience with J-Horror, but I'm realizing that this "slowly creep into the attic and then something jumps at your head" is a running trope. And it fucking gets me every single time fuck. >_>

Anyways, here's some random shit I thought looked cool/funny lol

Ju-on is probably my least liked J-horror or Asian horror of the boom of that period. It genuinely felt like it was just jump scare after jump scare with no interesting narrative or mythological element to it. Stuff like Ring and Dark Water where it felt like they were doing something with it and the spoopy ghost wasn't just the goal in itself I liked much better. Hell, One Missed Call or whatever it was called by Miike is even likeable for some of its more fun elements.

That said, it's been like ten + years since I've seen Juon. I didn't like it so I never rewatched it. I think its the one with the epilogue with the daughter years later, but I honestly couldn't say for sure.

Ring and Dark Water definitely had more interesting stories. But I love vibing out to this kind of stuff. Just sort of seeing how the curse progressively spreads creates this atmosphere that I love to get absorbed into.

I haven't watched it but I really loved the marketing campaign for this movie, lol.

This was so fucked up. >_>

The Netflix series killed the horror with that hilarious CGI fetus, which Im actually kind of glad for because fuck this is some dark shit. Here the minimalism of it all, and just leaving that shit to your imagination, oh gosh

@Flauros wait is this like jason vs freddy?
How did the two ghost fight each other in an epic battle when one is trapped inside a video tape and other one is earthbound to a house? The most realistic way to do this if some handsome japanese guy who are well versed in spiritual knowledge exhausted all the option to help a troubled japenese girl who just watched the tape because she wanted to save her other friend from the ghost?

From the wiki page, apparently a girl gets cursed by one of them and they come up with the idea of getting another curse to make them fight each other and cancel it out.

it doesn't work
