I thought it was sad that the three-part pilot episode had greater characterization than the Michael Bay movie.

The GI Joe movie is such a beautiful disaster. They took an already absurd setting and introduced a city of living Cobra people? Wow.

That being said around 1998-1999 when I rented it as a kid I couldnt stop rewatching it.

Killing off damn near everyone in Transformers is why Duke "is gonna be okay" at the end of GI Joe.

With that said I have seen the GI Joe film. Amazing intro, but from there it takes a turn. Still good and all. It still had the feel of the show since the movie retained the music (which was also used in S3 of Transformers). Then of course there's Duke's "coma" as a result of Optimus Prime, and the COBRALALALALA thing is hilarious.

Love both cartoon movies.
ALL the live action ones are trash.

And why did they need John Cena if they weren't going to put him in the Bumblebee movie. Which is another thing, why is Bumblebee only like 10 minutes long? I mean it has the G1 opening, they leave Cybertron and the movie just ends. Happens every time, wonder why they made the movie so short.....to much G1 awesomeness I guess.

Watched both movies as a kid...well probably teenager since they came out around 1987?

G.I. Joe: The Movie was weird. All the Sci-Fi with the pods and the B.E.T. was cool, but Cobra-La was like a crazy fever dream. I could never stand Sgt. Slaughter as a Joe (or as a wrestler) so he ruined it the most for me. Poor Cobra Commander didn't deserve what he got...

Transformers: The Movie was terrible to me. Killing off popular characters or drastically changing them wasn't cool in my opinion, but I knew what they were doing...making new toys to sell. Seeing Devastator was nice. Wasn't a fan of Unicron or the song that everyone seems to love so much..."The Touch."

G.I. Joe: The Movie / 8 out of 10
Transformers: The Movie / 6 out of 10

The thing about G.I. Joe: The Movie is that the plot focuses on mutants from a lost civilization. That's not exactly the first thing one thinks about when you mention a military-themed cartoon show. It feels like they took a planned pilot for a series about Atlantis and shoehorned in the G.I. Joes.

The plot to Transformers: The Movie may be that a larger, deadlier robot has arrived to destroy the Earth, but that's an extension of the basic premise of the show. A larger robot fits in with a series about robots fighting robots. Turning a show about American heroes battling terrorists into a film about the military battling mutants is a deviation from the central premise.

It still works. It's just not the best fit.

I never saw the original animated movie. I have really gotten into the original cartoon in general though, recently. I'm surprised at how much better it holds up, compared to Transformers G1.

Looking back on it, it's really cringy to me how we were taught Russia was the bad guy, and you had no freedom over there because they force you to love the state and motherland above else or whatever. Meanwhile, we're indoctrinating our own kids with this GI Joe "All-American Hero," stuff and literally forcing them to stand and pledge allegiance to the flag on a daily basis lol. All without noticing even a hint of irony.

There's a big difference between state sponsored propaganda and a cartoon designed to sell children's toys.

Also I hate to break it you, but multiple incarnations of GI Joe feature a Russian equivalent of GI Joe whom the Americans worked with, often with the lesson of "Gee we're not so different after all."

Cobra La is weird. Serpentor gets a story arc in series and makes sense. But the lost Civ and the bonkers ending. So strange.
