For several reasons, but the main being that the Old Guard wants someone other than Trump nominated, seemingly without realizing that Trump is such a petty narcissist that he will deliberately go out of his way to sabotage that candidate after nomination.

It's wild how many times they have to learn that Trump doesn't actually "reward" loyalty. Someone standing in front to defend him is someone who could be thrown under the bus when convenient.

They do not want to and wouldn't have benefited from it.

Hopefully someday all the politicians that refused to stand up to Trump will be remembered in history books as traitors

Given they wanted to execute Pence along with any democrat they could find, just slightly. But all they care about is hanging onto power - even if it is only for a second longer. As it means they will get to enact laws that benefit them and fuck over those same insane cultists.

And they refuse to see anything beyond that - even if its means rushing to their own destruction. It's the exact same story here in the UK with the Tories, if unfolding in a slightly different way - blind loyalty to a hated moron who is openly selling them out as is another day they can pass another law to help themselves and their mates.
