Still thinking about how awesome the 85-95 era was and the many attempts by modern media to try and recapture it

Will today's kids look back on this era as fondly? Will the PS5/Series X be thought of as "retro" and "nostalgic"?

I doubt it

you dont see games trying to emulate 2006 (because the last big meaningful change was 3D and games really havent changed much since then) but in 2006 there were games trying to emulate 1990

i suppose if truly immersive VR tech is there and standard you might see a throwback to old school tv gaming, but I cant see that becoming so convenient as to be the norm

It's best to think of 2D games as a graphical style, like traditional hand drawn animation. It has charms that 3D doesn't have. That is what draws people to it. It's not just nostalgia.

This is one of the big parts of it I think

the other big part is that I don't think it's reasonable to make games like the big popular PS5 stuff on small indie budgets/time frames / staff size even if many years go by

I think at least for now we are at the peak of what graphics are going to be for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if 15 years from now we'll see the same type of graphics unless something major happens. I've said it before, consoles from this point on for the next 15 years should really work on reducing load times, file sizes and just making fun games instead of constantly trying to push the limits of what graphics we can strive for.

Side Note, It's also extremely difficult to recreate DOS outside of an old machine. Even DOSBOX doesn't do it properly.

only if some weird battle royale takes over and in that time, adults will talk about how "old school fortnite" was the best thing ever... which is a fucking sad and scary thought.
