Microsoft had nothing to do with its initial development (in fact, they're directly responsible for restricting it), they only got it because they bought Bungie at the right point.

i'd imagine that microsoft, after building their brand off of halo, would have objected heavily if bungie tried to force that into the contract negotiated when they split off from them. its like expecting gamefreak to leave nintendo and take pokemon with them.

That wasn't going to happen.

Bungie left because Microsoft wanted them to keep working on Halo. They valued the IP over the developer.

Microsoft would have never allowed that. It would have been like Sega losing the rights to Sonic. Halo has to be theirs for life.

Yeah I'm aware of all that. I'm saying that they deserved it more. It's like a writer starting a book series, then after he publishes it the publisher takes it from him.

Yeah there's no way in hell Ms would let them take halo. They'd probably burn Bungie down before they let that happen. 343 is doing good with Halo too so I'm glad they didn't. Bungie probably wouldn't have revisited halo for a long time after their departure.

Makes you wonder how Sony lost Crash and Spyro

They have also done nothing with Parappa the Rapper Umjammer Lammy and Ape Escape smh

if microsoft lost halo there's a good chance they aren't in the console war anymore.

Halo has been doing pretty badly the last few games but Infinite MP is really fun so eh. Have to see if they squander it or not

As for Bungie I don't think they actually care about Halo

they'd have never gotten off the ground without the huge pile of money microsoft threw at them. without control of the IP microsoft as the publisher would have had no incentive to fund them.

My only form of video games until I was like 10 was a 1994 Mac. Baby me played a lot of Marathon and Pathways Into Darkness. I don't think I ever got past the first level of either game.

Given that Bungie abandoned solid singleplayer stories after they split from MS, I'd rather they don't own Halo.

The game was basically finished when MS got them. It was actually a huge deal because it was supposed to be a PS release before MS made it Xbox exclusive.

Dunno if a development studio really compares to a single author. Even then the publisher usually keeps it depending on the right circumstance.

Sony never owned Crash or Spyro. Universal did. Then Activision/Vivendi bought Universal Interactive. Sony just published the games.

Same thing happened with Microsoft and Mass Effect. When Bioware got bought they kept the IP and EA took it.

This absolutely is not true. Halo changed significantly during development.

It was also supposed to be a Mac release. Steve Jobs even announced it.

If were being completely honest, I dont think Sony is concerned about crash or Spyro. They got their run out of Crash with the trilogy. Crash 4 had its run and then went multi plat. Spyro just had the remakes and was seen as an after thought. Thats not what makes or breaks consoles anymore.

Yeah their only concern is COD and some Blizzard stuff. Crash/Spyro are irrelevant to Sony. They barely even make those kinds of games anymore.

What I don't get is Bungie went through alot of hell with Microsoft leading up to the day they chose to ditch Halo and remain independent instead for only a year until being bought by Sony.

I mean yes, it's 3.6 billion fucking dollars but still

They signed an exclusive agreement with Activision that they broke off 3-4 years ago

Now they have been acquired by Sony with an arrangement that they get to remain as a functionally independent studio that can self-publish their titles wherever they want.

Sounds like they have now actually got what they wanted.

I agree. As much shit as people give 343 over Halo I liked every game they made that I played (missed 5 because I didn't own an Xbone. Loved infinite on pc most recently.
