Well, it's been a long time since I just chilled out and played a new game for hours at a time. So I guess I'm enjoying it a lot.

I just caught *THIS IS PROBABLY CLOSE TO ENDGAME SPOILERS* Dialga, and I'm sad that life is currently keeping me from playing right now.

Dialga was the first legendary I made my bitch.

Fond memories of that one.

It looks like it's a dual badge system: Star Level (up to 10) and Stamp Level (up to 5) not sure if the stamp will be meaningful other then just having it.

The ranks you get from completing pokedex objectives and do share a similiar function in that you can control higher level Pokemon. You also get access to new items and more money from objectives. The stamps are for the lords you calm through the story.

This sounds like a decent game for people whose only interest in Pokemon is catching them all. I'm not sure if it has much merit outside of that, but I'm glad it has at least some promise.

I'm still salty over the starters and some of the regional variants (looking at you, sneasle/weavile) but that's not a big deal.

I'm quite fine with how Pokemon was without it being this open-world type game. I know that's what people like because the most popular games are like that, but for Pokemon I prefer the good 'ol RPG style. It doesn't feel like Pokemon otherwise.

It literally is the pokemon company and Nintendo said it was. But you're you and you'll argue it even though it's true.

they can say whatever they want, it's clearly not a mainline title just due to all the missing features present in mainline titles for the past 25 years.

also, i've never been able to find them saying that anywhere, just people saying that they've said it, which is less than helpful.

Pokemon doesn't need to be an open-world type ass game, it's an rpg. There's no nostalgia if they change that.

...No it ain't.
Mainline is like HGSS, BW/BW2, XY etc. Each new generation with a new region, new Pokedex, and new legendaries. This is a side game.

i think an argument can be made that no Zelda is a mainline Zelda since it's all just remakes

This is officially a mainline game, where story of this game is actually going to be canon as such. The side games don't have a story that matters in the rest.

With the start of the game, I wouldn't be surprised if this causes an alternate time line that brings back some of the extinct pokemon to the later timeline.

I prefer the classic style where you actually enter battle and it's separate from the overworld. That's what makes it feel like Pokemon.

You can prefer whatever you want but you said the new way is less immersive. That's nonsense. Seemlessly entering battle on the overworld is a lot more immersive than warping to the battle dimension in the turned based games. If pokemon were a real thing, it would look much more like PLA than the main games.

I'm also not sure why it matters if they get rid of the nostalgia. You still have like 8 generations of pokemon games to play if you want nostalgia.

I'm further in now (8/10 stars, main team in mid 60s, still haven't started the story in region 2) and the game is a lot of fun. I didn't realize just how important backstriking to initiate battle was but it lets you snipe just 1 pokemon in a distortion instead of having to fight 3-4 at a time. It also helps even the odds against alphas so you don't just automatically have your first pokemon wiped. I went back to the first area to do something real quick and 6 hours later I'm still there, just sidetracked by one thing after another cause theres always something to do and always something new you didn't find before. I also think I've caught more pokemon total than in all the previous games combined. It's a good game.

Rough estimate of what I've heard.

Good rough concept for a Pokemon game. Most effort put in by Game Freak in a very long time.

If you're tired of the same old Pokemon formula (rather then the people who love it) it might be worth a try.

Game looks cheap and unpolished.

I've heard some people say the story is good, and some say it's terrible, but most say the characters aren't memorable.

Let's go are also mainline games lol

A mainline game is defined as a new generation. A new generation includes new starters, a new region, a new Pokedex, and new legendaries.

Everything else is a side game.

Them calling it and Let's Go a mainline game is just them explaining that the stories are canon to the Pokemon world (Let's Go being a spin on a remake, and Arceus being set in the past) -- they aren't saying that it's a new generation, which is what is meant to be considered "mainline".

PLA and Lets Go are mainline games because theyre marketed that way. Thats really all there is to it. TPC decides whats mainline, and decidedly these two (three) are part of Gen 7 and 8

Yeah, they're PART of the generation. They aren't a new gen. That makes them not a main game. Main games are new gens.

Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, Black 2 / White 2, Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon, remakes of Gen 1, 2 and 3...

Main games are what GameFreak decides.

Plenty of RPGs are open-world

I will say that the anxiety of catching a shiny Pokemon in an open world format would be INTENSE.

i don't understand how people are getting them left and right

i've only seen a shiny wurmple so far. honestly though, it's a standalone game with no trade economy so who cares?

apparently if you complete the specific pokemon's dex entry (100% perfect, not just the initial 10 points) it boosts the rate for that one a lot. plus there's a good chance for one to show up in a swarm, and those odds stack.

Eventually youll be able to go from PLA to Home, and presumably to SwSh for some Pokmon.

Side quests are fun. Got asked to water the plant pokemon. :)

I've pretty much checked out on this game. I gave it a week.

In the end - it's very meh. Not nearly as good as Pokemon Red/Blue & Yellow.

I think it's the action RPG parts of the game that really suck. Most of the turn-based stuff was ok (even that had issues though - like levels nearly worthless), but between the action RPG elements and un-skippable cutscenes, I'll probably never touch this game again.
