Like using a short clip of someone's gameplay footage or something? I see this done ALL the time, but I very rarely see credit given, and I can't find any sort of authoritative answer on it.

My problem is I want to make a video, and I need some clips of some semi-obscure game footage, a lot of which were uploaded like a decade ago by inactive Japanese users. I can try asking, but I doubt I'll get a response in a lot of cases.

In that case, would it be bad practice to take a few seconds of footage for my own video? I figure I would credit the uploader, but idk if this is frowned upon to do without permission. Is it weird to ask for permission in the first place?

Ask permission first no matter what.
Credit of the footage on the clip & in the description. Etc.
I will now say "that's how I would do it, but I'm not an expert." so as to remove blame upon myself.
this.

and dont make your entire video just one persons clips. at least add a little commentary of your own but even thats kinda meh. Daily Dose and Highlight Reel do it right tho (among others of course)

ok cool, this sounds good to me. I'm not sure how well I can ask someone who doesn't speak English though >_> hopefully I don't miscommunicate and they say no lol

Put a credit in the bottom right corner and a link in the description.
