Oh yeah definitely this too. It was part of "operation red meat", the plan to announce lots of "popular policies" to try and distract from the fact that every day there's some story about another illegal party the government held during lockdown, or that the PM's team was threatening to withhold funding from constituencies if their MP didn't vote for the PM's policies.

Scotland and Wales had some beefy restrictions in place over Christmas. England didnt.

Weve not seen a massive spike in deaths yet in England. And the difference between England and Scotland / Wales is pretty much nothing.

So far based on the data there is little to suggest deaths follow cases with omicron and a large vaccinated population. Although this pandemic has taught me not to take anything for granted.

Youre point is fair. However your point and the fact current data suggests deaths dont follow omicron cases arent mutually exclusive.

Check my first link. Masks were mandatory and you could be fined for not wearing one.

I think we should abolish mask mandates too. Replace them with vaccine mandates so we can drag people into progress and the modern world despite their tantrums

Imagine believing you are safe from COVID because you wore a mask while walking to your table to follow Covid restrictions but then immediately take your mask off as soon as you sit down at a restaurant

If its basic it wont be hard to find decent sources then. These topics always revolve into oh its so simple its just x y and z and yet no one ever posts any evidence. Theyve just repeated something theyve heard elsewhere.

The vaccine was always the best way out of the pandemic and with the UK being one of the highest vaccinated countries in the world its no surprise we are the first ones able to come out of lockdowns.

I agree completely. Still we have to learn to live with covid eventually. Even if you disagree now is the right time in the UK based on the data (Ive not seen anything to suggest it isnt) time will tell. At the very least its a good experiment for the rest of the world to watch and see what happens.

Ill keep this topic bumped over the coming weeks so Ill welcome any news / posts moving forwards that suggests this was the wrong decision.

You can get rid of a mask mandate and still require infected people to isolate. There is no reason not to keep that rule.

Whats the rationale for isolating if the current data suggests omicron is less deadly in a largely vaccinated country?

Check the link I posted above for the full data but weve had an absolutely massive increases in cases since Christmas and so far deaths and hospitalisations have not increased at the same rate.

The evidence suggests variants are more likely caused in largely unvaccinated demographics. It has nothing to do with transmissibility. With something like omicron and the fact its so highly infectious isolating doesnt really help in reducing transmission. I mentioned this in my comparison between England and Scotland \ Wales which have had different restrictions in place with similar outcomes in terms of deaths and hospitalisations.

So it turns out Boris had a party on his birthday during the height of the first lockdown. I understand people not wanting to follow the rules after seeing such blatant disregard from the politicians.

Yes I dont disagree with any of that. My post merely stated its more likely in unvaccinated people. I wasnt stating its not possible to happen in a majorly vaccinated population. My other point was that due to the transmissibility of omicron that its really really unlikely someone will be able to avoid it forever. At least not enough people to be a factor in whether a new variant will arise or not. I pointed to the England vs Scotland and Wales situation to give an example of how restrictions seem to have a reasonably small affect on transmission.

Happy to dig out the data / research to back this up when Im on my PC.
