There's a weird revisionist history where people act like games like Pokemon b/w or hg/ss were impressive at the time. Sprite scaling was not "woah!" on the Nintendo DS, let alone in fucking 2010. Like, Nintendo knows the drill, and the only people aside from GF themselves they answer to is Nintendo. It's honestly more the fact that there were clear effort involved, and they were honestly one of the best sprite workers in the industry. The biggest problem is almost none of that translated to their 3D efforts. There were so much outsourcing and general incompetence that was born from extremely late adoption. There was no guarantee that this company was gonna be good at 3D development, and lo and behold, they sucked ass since the 3DS days. Also they initially got Genius Sorority to pick up the 3D slack, and Genius Sorority had a lot more talent in 3D back then than Gamefreak does now lmao. But it's unclear as to why they weren't allowed to create full on 3D campaigns ever since XD. Instead ever since then, they mostly ended up doing 2D puzzle games.
