Which One?

https://atarivcs.com/

Not sure outside of Nostalgia why anyone would pay for this, when you can do most of the stuff on a low budget PC/Laptop

Nah, Atari and several other old school developers seem to put out the same product every few years.

friendly reminder that "Atari" is really Infogrames

seems interesting but obviously would have to have good games/software to make it worthwhile, like any system

No you can stream games from other services (like Amazon Prime), and they have some deals with Indie Devs for Exclusives

I mean, it's sick that you can toss Ubuntu on there, with that you're golden to toss RetroArch on. Pricey though.

Anyone have good experiences with those plug-and-play joystick things

I got a Namco one for Pac-Man and Galaga but the joystick itself feels shitty

I would love to have a "Flashback" version of the Atari 800. With a keyboard and games like Star Raiders.

The 400 and 800 were a completely separate series and were released 2 years after the 2600. They were actual computers with a keyboard and optional tape drive, floppy drive, modem and printers. But they also could take cartridges, though different from the 2600s, and because they had much faster CPUs and more RAM the games were much higher quality. The 800 was the high-end version with two cartridge slots, expandable RAM up to 48k, a real keyboard, and a monitor output, the 400 had a single slot, fixed 8k RAM (later 16k), and a membrane keyboard that was hell to type on. Their primary competitor was the Commodore 64. They could play games, but they also had word processors, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, programming language, and art software. There was even a BBS program.

Star Raiders was the "killer app" for the system and was an incredibly complex game for the time. It was a 3D first-person space combat simulator with multiple types of enemies with different tactics and performance (some with shields), hyperspace, a galactic chart, long-range scanner, a damage control system, a targeting computer, and starbases. This was from 1979, 3 years before the horrid 2600 versions of Pac-Man and E.T.

They borrowed a lot from Star Wars, Star Trek, and Battlestar Galactica. The enemies are called Zylons and time in game is measured in centons, the standard Fighters look like TIE fighters, the Patrol ships look like Klingon Battlecruisers, and the Basestars look like Cylon Basestars.
