The genre in general just feels like the ultimate endpoint of video games as just a time waster

i beat my first run and now the goal is to just keep playing it over and over again with minor percentage changes to some stats? Meanwhile itll drip-feed me story content?

ultimately its pretty fun but the relatively slow speed you gain permanent upgrades makes the game feel unsatisfying overall.

I really dont get how it won so many GOTY awards

I will say that the speed in which you earn upgrades increases a lot once you do unlock that heat system since each added heat rewards you with new bounties.

All you describe is to supplement the core of skill-based gameplay. It's not a static RPG, it's a git gud engine.
I mean, yeah, its a fun hack n slash. But Ive beaten the final boss now and I feel like subsequent runs arent really adding anything beyond some minor number changes

i feel like Ive seen everything the game really has to offer but somehow its supposed to last dozens if not hundreds more runs?

There's a lot more story content after that, but yeah, the gameplay is the drawing point. Sounds like it's just not the type of game you enjoy.

Most find it fun and rewarding to rack different combos of powers and weapons. Getting more story after each victory is icing on the cake.

Sorry you're not enjoying it though.

To be clear, Im not not enjoying it

i just dont see where the heaps of praise are coming from. It just feels like the game has a lot of busywork in how slowly you acquire the currencies needed to upgrade stuff at this point

i dont feel like Im getting notably more out of this experience than like, a mobile game or something

Ah shit! I hit 32 heat last month with the shield. I did a 20 heat with it and whooped some ass, so I was like okay,, what 12 heats can I add here and be okay.. First try, but I did use all my D.D.s and just barely squeezed by

this is really interestting to read since I agree but I get the impression we mean sorta opposite things. personally I'd think the game was better if you didn't really gain permanent upgrades at all. the amount of meta-progression and just general difference in power between your first run and your 30th is absurd for something that presents itself mostly as distinct runs

honestly I'd say if you're finding the game too simple but still interested in the core gamepaly to just skip forward on the heat slider a bunch. I was going for the reward at 32 and just going up one at a time, 70ish hours in and I was still nowhere near so I just skipped directly from 15ish to 32, beat it, and uninstalled the game <_<

still nowhere near the final ending/epilogue thing, that just takes an abusrd amount of gameplay

I think people just like the moment-to-moment action a lot. I certainly do, it's fast paced and punishing when you slip up and just generally the experience of playing the game is fun. Gotta seperate your enjoyment of the process from your enjoyment of the rewards to really like the game imo

Just sounds like you don't like thing as much as others like thing. Nothing wrong with that.

Fwiw the gameplay is really solid, finding new combos is fun, but what really keeps me in are the characters and storylines.

If that doesn't keep you then it just isn't your game.

I can appreciate the depth of content and how reactive the writing is, but the roguelike "try over and over" gameplay just isn't my thing. I can tolerate it for a while but meh, eventually I just lost interest.

Omg that's awesome haha. I'm slowly enjoying it by adding one heat at a time. I actually 20 heated every weapon last year. But recently I felt like picking it up again so I just decided to see how high I could go. I'm going to try other weapons too but for now, I'm using Aspect of Zeus Shield as it's the easiest for me. So fun! This is first game where I don't rage when I die because I just enjoy the experience that much.
