Story goes Carpenter wasn't interested in making a sequel after NY, a script was written by someone else and JC thought it was dumb so the movie was in development hell for like 10 years until Kurt Russell begged him to write his own story.

So Carpenter and Debra Hill teamed up again and he came up with story that took the same exact concept, narrative progression, and character templates from NY and reworked everything into a story that mocked and satirized things from the West coast (Hollywood, televangelism, etc) he kind of despised while also having Paramount distribute it lol.

The cast was damn good (Bruce Campbell, Steve Buscemi, Cliff Robertson, Peter Fonda lol) though but everything else like CGI which was done by amateurs with no real film experience plus the bombastic music from Shirley Walker (who composed Batman TAS) ended up being a totally bizarre campy mess.

Escape from LA is fucking terrible. The best part was the EMP setting all technology back a hundred years. NY was much better.

Escape from NY was great. Escape from LA is like a comedy to me since I laugh at way too many things going on. I still like it though, but NY was way more gritty and serious in tone.

The 4K set is impressive.

I didn't know it was supposed to be anything other than a silly action comedy but I also never saw Escape from NY.

Compared to Carpenter's original, LA is like if you had to work on a report you didn't feel like putting effort into so you plagiarized your own work and substituted all the names and places instead. It's very fascinating how blatant it is.

Now, I can understand why people love Escape From New York so much, and I have warmed up to it over the years. But, the first time I watched it, all I could think is, why? Why would they turn Manhattan into a prison? If they were going to turn any city into a prison, it would be Cleveland.

Cleveland was already the setup to Snake getting captured and sent to NY although idk if that was a prison city/state.

The weird thing is that the Cleveland robbery wasn't even in the final cut and yet it feels even more tonally similar to Metal Gear Solid when that game was inspired enough as it was by it. God I love that movie.
