A transgender man was left feeling disgusted and ashamed after being refused service at a barbershop and told "we don't cut women's hair."

James, who did not wish to give his surname, claims he was turned away from Horwich Barber in Bolton on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who transitioned two years ago, visited the barber in Greater Manchester for a haircut at around 4.30pm. Having visited the salon three times before, he entered the shop and asked staff if they were still open.

But he was shocked to be told "we are open but we don't cut women's hair", he told Manchester Evening News (MEN).

James, a pub chef, said: It was shocking as I have been before. Since transitioning, things havent been the easiest to talk about or anything like that.

I felt disgusted being treated like I didnt even matter. I felt so bad and ashamed of my body. Due to me being transgender, being called a woman is very hurtful and disrespectful."

James told how he was forced to leave the premises and left feeling ashamed of his body after being misgendered.

He said he spoke out to raise awareness of the issue while many people are still scared to leave their homes for fear of being misgendered.

It would be good to put a highlight on this issue due to there being so many people who are scared to go outside without being judged on what they look like or sound like, and scared of being misgendered," he said.

The Mirror Online has contacted Horwich Barber for comment.

A spokesperson for the barbershop told the MEN: I am out of the country in Turkey but a staff member kindly explained we only have barbers qualified for men's haircuts.

We are not qualified to cut long hair.

Kinda sus that he went 3 times without issue but then suddenly there's a problem once they know he is transgender.

Especially the whole "Well the owners are out of the country and can't comment since it's apparently 1745 and instant global communication doesn't exist."

He doesn't even have long hair in the first place :/

Well, I don't blame the barber. The person looks like a woman. Did the person explain to the barber that they do not identify as a woman?

Weird that they mention that they don't cut women's hair. Pretty irrelevant in this situation.

It's a way to troll that the mods haven't put a stop to, of course he won't stop doing it.

And any barbershop that turns down business and makes less money is run by idiots, so they are just punishing themselves.

I'd pay a transgender woman to go in to see what they say. Either they cut her hair cause she by their definition is a man or they contradict themselves

I honestly wish context mattered more than the word itself. I understand something like the n word being offensive.

I got modded once for using the wrong term despite the rest of the message being clearly positive about the person. So thanks for actually explaining it rather than just hitting report. Granted that word was worse but just what I knew thanks to porn

As someone who has been questioning their gender identity, the results of this poll sure make it seem like it would make life easier to just repress my feelings and do nothing.

I've had it happen. Message clearly meaning no hate or disrespect but I used a word someone didn't like.

It's really not that hard and isn't new. Referring to anyone merely as "an adjective" has always been dehumanizing. Just throw person or man/woman/etc after it. Simple.
