I hope not.
Omni seems to be a very mild variant, so hopefully that's the way that the virus keeps mutating.

At this point, we're just waiting for a variant that won't overwhelm hospitals. Omicron looks like the first step, hopefully variants continue to have less hospitalizations.

Yes. That's why I said Omicron looks like the first step. Since it's severely contagious, there are more cases which will inevitably lead to more hospitalizations. But if info from SA and UK are true, cases are going to fall off a cliff very soon, and hopefully lead to less conatgious/more milder variants.

No, Omicron is burning through the population and will lead to a certain amount of herd immunity soon. Covid won't go away, probably ever, but it will become endemic like the seasonal flu, with yearly vaccines, and generally have milder strains. Omicron is already very mild for people smart enough to be boosted.

I went to my vet yesterday. They are fed up and the only thing they are still doing is making their employees wear masks, but not expecting anything whatsoever from customers. This is from a business that for the last two years has taken it very seriously, and now they are not. I believe this attitude becomes more common everyday.

So let me ask you, if everyone is fed up and starts saying fuck it im doing what I want what do you think happens?

Hospitals get overrun. A bunch of people die, mostly unvaccinated, some vaccinated but not boosted, hardly anyone boosted. And then some herd immunity. Not saying I want that, but what I think would happen.

It's possible. Two years after the initial lockdowns, people are still stupid enough to believe that covid is any more or less severe than the other tens or hundreds of diseases that plague humanity, so they'll continue to overrun hospitals at the first sign of a slight cough or brain fog, petition to enforce mask mandates that have been unnecessary for months, and create a vaccine-centric shitstorm that doesn't help anyone become as informed as they need to be.

The general population stopped caring about the disease itself long ago, it's all politics and parading vaccination status as some form of moral grandstanding. Get vaccinated if you believe it's right, and if not, that's fine too; natural selection will inevitably take its course regardless of your status.

Mandates and restrictions need to be lifted--especially those regarding masks--but we know that won't happen; instead, we're probably set for a third year of the same shit.

Come on, man. Numbers show delta variant is still the highest death ratio. Do a little research.

The surge that we're currently in and the relatively incredibly low amount of new cases from portions of last year pretty much guarantee that this year will out pace it.

So yeah. It's almost definitely going to be worse than last year. We had states getting single digit cases a day for a stretch last year. We're not getting back to that.

I predict it will be below last year once we get past Q1

Once again, I predict it will be below last year once we get past Q1

I could be wrong, as there is no way to know how mutations could have an impact. But if Omicron keeps tearing through people (and there is evidence it is giving immunity to the other strains), then this could help with some herd immunity. Too bad it is causing such issues for hospitals though.

I try to be optimistic in general, vs what seems to be the doom and gloom norm around here. People I know in real life are optimistic too. And almost everyone I know, including myself, is pretty liberal.

I really don't think so. At least not in US. I mean, we might have big numbers in couple weeks due to all the cases right now. But I think it will then get better. Cases are already slowing where Omicron first hit.

Maybe we are in agreement somewhat, but I see this as a Q1 problem, not a full year problem.

Oh, I know. My above post is still true. It is now slowing in spots, so I still say it is a Q1 problem. I am hopeful for the rest of the year.

I also just noticed that the vast majority of gamefaqs is way more introverted than me based on the daily poll. This may impact how we view things.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-01-12/omicron-causing-less-severe-illness-study-suggests

A preliminary study based on medical records from nearly 70,000 Kaiser Permanente Southern California patients noted substantially reduced risk of severe clinical outcomes in patients who are infected with the Omicron variant compared with Delta, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study which included more than 52,000 Omicron cases and nearly 17,000 Delta cases within the Kaiser system from Nov. 30 to Jan. 1 found that, compared with patients infected with Delta, those who had Omicron were 53% less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19, 74% less likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit, and 91% less likely to die of the disease.

Among patients who were hospitalized, the median length of stay was 1.5 days for patients infected with Omicron and five days for those who had Delta.

Another sign of Omicrons lighter touch: None of the patients who had it required mechanical ventilation.

The data in this study remain consistent with what we are seeing from Omicron in other countries, including South Africa and the U.K., and provide some understanding of what we can expect over the coming weeks as cases are predicted to peak in this country, Walensky said during a briefing Wednesday.

Omicron is not nearly as bad as Delta or the original strain.
