The AppData thing is for a couple reasons.

  1. Permissions- Unless you are an administrator you can't look into someone else user folder in AppData.
  2. Hide it from noobs- The AppData folder is hidden by default because its generally stuff a non technical user wouldn't/shouldn't be mucking with. They don't want to have a user accidently delete their save games while they are deleting some old files and folders from their Documents folder.
