They wanted to make Europe as disunited as possible so that they wouldn't gang up on them when they invaded Ukraine. Even worse scenario is if North Korea sees China take Taiwan and Russia take Ukraine, North Korea (which is in VERY serious need of financial gains) will go after South Korea. South Korea is the # 2 biggest producer of computer chips in the world (Samsung is one of the companies that produces very important chips there). If North Korea decides to do this, their army would easily destroy the South Korean army (honestly, North Korea has enough impressive weaponry in comparison to South Korea to the point where they arguably don't even have to send land troops to win). Taiwan and South Korea have a near monopoly on production of the most important computer chips in the world. If China and North Korea takes them, the entire rest of the world are screwed for many, many, MANY reasons. Of course, all of this is just worst case scenario.
