Thats how its always been.

But fighting games originated in the arcades where all you had to do is walk on over to the newest update of Street Fighter II to play as the latest characters.

when those updates came to home console, you have to pay full price each and every time or wait a while for a sale.

I hate casual fighting game fans. You don't give a shit about Anna not being in Tekken 7 but you're still gonna act like it's an earth shattering deal breaker anyway.

DBZF fans are the literal worst. They've never played a fighting game in their life and knows nothing about the FGC, and yet they want to interject like they're some know-it-all elite all around gamer.

Well yes, the fighting game community is the most miserable pile of filth in all of gaming. So actually you make a good point that they get what they deserve with the DLC extortion.

Same here, as ive aged and now have a full time job/family ive leaned more towards games I can pick up, play for a little while and put down while having a feeling of accomplishment, and fighting games fit that bill perfectly. However I stay FAR away from online and/or ranked play in every fighting game I play.

Me: I love these characters and their cool moves, also the single player story mode was a lot of fun.
Them: OMG THEY MADE CHANGES TO THE HITBOX FRAMES NEUTRAL MIDS WHATEVER FIGHTING GAME JARGON

I find the current state of fighting games really off-putting tbh. Like on one hand it's cool that they can add new characters and stuff but I hate the idea of having to purchase a game piecemeal, and since I'm not the type to main characters it will always feel like I'm missing out if I don't have characters. It just feels like if you buy a fighting game now you're not getting the whole thing

Does that mean they were already in-game and I just paid to unlock them?

If so then my God fighting game developers are absolute Chads even more than I already thought.

Nah. Older fighting games had great sized rosters compared to now. Capcom vs SNK 2 had 48 playable characters. Marvel vs Capcom 2 had 56. Marvel vs Capcom 3 had a base roster of 36.

I hate the direction fighters have gone.

The absolute worst part of it all is, that if you wait long enough for a Definitive Edition release, or a big sale with all of the content for cheap, the game will be long dead by then

Nowadays communities for any given fighting game shrivel up within two months of release, and the fragmentation from not having cross-platform play only makes it worse

Funny because when these games first came out there were tons of people outraging over some characters not returning. A smaller roster doesn't help these games sell.

well we see most new fighting games, games that aren't asset flips, come out with 16-24 characters, and even then often times games still get delayed

if a game has way more its usually a naruto ninja storm derivative

the fact that people who bought street fighter V on launch, and bought it yesterday are all in the same player pool is better then that game being 5 different games

What you're describing reminds me of the worst shit in MK9, where the compatibility packs were optional so someone that paid for the DLC characters wouldn't be able to use them if their opponent was a coward. Compatibility updates for multiplayer games with DLC are essential.

In MK9 if you didn't buy let's say Rain for example then you had the option of downloading an optional compatibility update so that you'd be able to fight him in your game. If you don't download this then you stop everyone you play against from having the option to use Rain, so you could essentially buy DLC for a game that doesn't do anything if your opponent says no. DLC characters need to be included in updates, so ofc you aren't downloading the whole character

Imagine if you're playing Borderlands or some shit and the compatibility updates were optional there too, so then some of your DLC guns just stop existing in your inventory when you join a random game. I don't play it with randoms, but that's the first thing that came to mind <_<

TBH DLC characters should be there in training mode for people to try out and lab against, otherwise it just feels like pay to win if you don't know the match up.

Sometimes the meta has developed around these characters and by not spending extra money you're being left out.

Right so you'd rather pay 60 bucks for SF2 and then another 60 bucks for SF2T. These greedy and scummy ways to milk you consumers ain't new but yall act like it's brand new.

That is definitely a thing that happens nowadays, but I think with GBVS it was just Beelzebub who was already on disc. And unlockable as well iirc.

Yeah I was able to get Beelzebub by completing the story mode and he was also available for instant access at a price. However when I bought everyone else there werent like downloads to add them to the game. I just clicked purchase and when I opened the game the lock icons were gone and that was it.

Only thing I can think of is they just add the character data to the game with the patches so its just ready to go upon purchase, which I guess isnt technically the same thing as on-disc DLC, though it basically is paying to unlock them.
