Not personally.

In all seriousness though, I hope everything is ok for you and your loved ones.

Everything is ok so far, my family had a good Thanksgiving. I asked this question because an uncle of mine was recently diagnosed with this cancer. He's 37 years old. I would not say this came out of the left-field as he was initially a pack-a-day smoker but then recently moved to chewing tobacco Apparently, the cancer has already metastasized in his liver already. I was wondering how screwed he is. He has his port surgery on Monday and chemotherapy after that.

Tangentially I had an uncle with lung cancer that spread to the esophagus among other places. It was not pretty. I don't know if this is about you or someone in your family but I wish them all the luck in the world because that is a very not good diagnosis.

My dad got it last year and it spread through him very quickly, he only lasted a few months. Hope your uncle does better.

My grandfather had it and it quickly spread to his stomach, intestines, then liver and kidneys.

Thank you, I understand that lung cancer is also quite serious, I hope your uncle is in a good place.

It's not good news

I saw the video linked in your article, it's very said what happened to the young woman. It's crazy the doctors didn't do an endoscopy earlier.

Wow, I did not know he passed from the same cancer. I'll have to watch this video later as I liked some of his other works.

I am very sorry to hear. If you don't mind answering, how did he react to treatments? I read that for Esophageal cancer, chemo is not very effective.

The outlook is definitely gloomy. You're basically playing for time with Stage 4 cancer. Once the cells have spread to other parts of the body they could be basically anywhere else too and there isn't much hope of any kind of cure. I'm sure there are lucky folks out there, but the only people who have a reasonable shot of a cure is if the cancer is in a discrete, removable lump. And even then, it might still have spread elsewhere or you might fail to get it all.

These are things I learned first hand from a couple of close relatives dying of cancer. I had a semi-distant relative who had esophageal cancer specifically, and all I can say about it was it was ugly and quick. Your guy might do better being so young? Try and treasure your time with him and love him a lot if you can. Even in cases where you don't know the person well or weren't close, having someone die of cancer leaves you with a lot of regrets.

Im so sorry. Fingers and toes crossed for your uncle, your family and you.

Has his oncologist given him any idea of his chances? In this sort of situation, itd be his doctors whod know the most. Stage IV can be mixed, depending on when its diagnosed and how invasive the cancer is.

That's the type of cancer that got my grandma. She got into remission for two years after chemo, but when it came back she decided to not go through chemo again.

Unfortunately it has one of the lowest 5 year survival rates among cancers. If its metastasized thats a bad sign survival rates tend to drop notably once that happens. Its not hopeless but you should brace yourself for the worst and make sure to set aside time to visit and support him because the odds are against him so dont let there be any regrets.

I am deeply sorry that someone you care about(or anyone at all) has to get such a horrible disease.

Man, fuck cancer.

My brother, at 38, got Colon Cancer. Everyone in the family got checked and nothing going on so just a weird mutation on his side. Got all his ducks in a row and he was cancer free for about 3 and a half years.

A check back in like October of 2020 found cancer spots in his lungs and a tumor on his liver. Thankfully he responded well to chemo and whatnot and they finally found a way to operate on the tumor (nanoknife procedure) but they kinda want him to be on chemo for the rest of his life.

He recently chose to go down to a maintenance level of chemo to give him a better quality of life while still having protection.

I hope for nothing but the best for your uncle and your family. Fuck Cancer

Not yet but I had a fungal infection in my esophagus that made it too painful to swallow food for around 6 months, leading to my shedding of about 50 lbs.

He had one round of chemo, it kicked his ass and he passed away a week and a half later.

My dad had it, it killed him. They caught it at stage 3, and for awhile the treatments helped but eventually it continued to spread till it got into his lungs and that was the end. The chief issue is that it tends to not show symptoms until it's spread throughout large portions of your body, hence the Stage IV diagnosis. I'm very sorry to hear about your uncle.

I'm very very thankful that what I had was caught at stage one and was very treatable.

How did they find what you had
CT scan because of abdominal pain showed a swollen lymphnode in my abdomen near the terminal ileum (where large and small intestine meet). GI doc thought it was possibly Crohn's disease so they did a colonoscopy. Which they were not doing during the march through july of the 2020 pandemic unless it was an emergency. Checking for signs of mildly sympomatic Crohn's would not have qualified.

Instead what the colonoscopy and the biopsies they took showed was high grade b-cell lymphoma. Further testing broke it down to a type of non-hodgkins lymphoma called Burkitt's lymphoma. The one of the fastest growing and spreading type of cancer in existence. So supposing it had been 2020 instead of 2019 they would have put off my colonoscopy for 3-4 months, during which time it could have gone from stage 1 to 4 because of how fast it grows.

Assuming I could have survived that I would have had a compromised immune system from the treatment during the absolute worst part of the pandemic. Which is why I wear a mask everywhere I go still because I'm not going to be the guy who gives someone like TC's uncle COVID when the dude is already fighting for his existence.

This is literally my situation right now although it's not related to cancer. Thank you.
