For example.

1) Were always told not to compare ourselves to others.

2) We shouldnt care what other people think of us.

3) Life isnt fair and we should get over it.

However...

1) Most academic and career fields are competitive and you should absolutely compare yourself to others, as your instructors, supervisors, and hiring managers will be doing the exact same thing.

2) Its important what people think about you because thats how we forge relationships, meet connections, and gain employment. The way you present yourself physically and intellectually matters to other people so of course it should matter to yourself. The way others perceive you matters.

3) Life isnt fairexcept that we have standards, regulations, and laws to ensure that life is actually *pause* fair. If something isnt fair, there shouldnt be this stigma where its inappropriate to call out unfair policies or treatment. The excuse life isnt fair is usually given when the same standards arent being applied across the board, or someone in a position of power is playing favorites. Simply put, its a phrase normally used to justify unjust actions.

I agree with the first and do it well. Definitely disagree with the second. We just shouldn't put all our worth in how others see us.

Because other people care about the way you look, the way you talk, the way you express emotions, how how intelligent you ate etc. All of us, whether its consciously or subconsciously, judge other people based on these characteristics, and so is every one else when it comes to yourself.

I mean, how could anyone say they dont care what their friends think of them, what their crush thinks of them, or what their potential employer thinks of them?
