We can die right now at this very second because of various circumstances.
At any point, at any given time:
-a asteroid could land in your obliterating everything including yourself
-a truck driver could lose control of their vehicle and slam directly into your home, killing you instantly with little to no time time to react
-a sink hole could form beneath your house and your entire house implodes turning whatever that's inside your house into a debris filled smoothie
-a HUGE rockslide/landslide/avalanche occurs and your home is decimated in the process
-a lightning bolt strikes you when you're walking during a storm/at home sleeping
-your swimming on the beach with your friends/girlfriend and in an instant a great white shark hunts you down and everyone watches you die as they could do nothing to save you
-the food you ate not too long ago wasn't properly inspected, undercooked or laced with a powerful poison and you die a slow painful death because of food poisoning/consumption of hazardous materials/overdose of a particular drug
-a blood vessel in your brain could pop
-your heart suddenly stops beating

There's a podcast called The Magnus Archive which kind of did an episode about this. A character comes across an avatar of the eldritch embodiment of the fear of death and makes her realize the absolute truth of the statement, "The moment that you die will feel exactly the same as this one."

It renders most people catatonic.

What scares me the most is what comes after, but then again, being scared of that is pointless, because it is something that is bound to happen regardless of what I do.

Around 9 years ago, someone I really cared for just happened to be in the situation you just said, Vegy, so I guess it's been since then I've had this mentallity.

So, I often don't think about it and just try to roll with what happens in my life. A shitty and lonely one at that, but better to have one than to have none, I suppose. I guess it is a good night to just think about what I have right now.

What scares me is the idea that every moment I spend living and aware brings me inexorably closer to a future in which awareness is impossible, and it will remain that way for the rest of all time. I can feel every second bringing me closer to the end.

No, honestly, it doesn't. I think about it alot.

What terrifies me is seeing my family and peers getting old, dying, etc as I too get older. I feel my age, sure, but it's worse thinking back to when your mom was sprightly and cooking dinner and now is older, grayer, and more taciturn.

My own mortality doesn't scare me at all.

I personally hope that the end is just complete timeless oblivion. Reincarnation or an afterlife would suck. Sleep is the best thing ever.

That's fine. There's nothing to fear. Death is natural. You cannot escape it. To fear the inevitable is an exercise in futility.

People will be ok without you. I don't say this in a negative sense but in the simple reality that they will have to be. There is no bringing back the dead. The living can only move foward. There's no other option.
