The issue is really simple, it just shouldn't cost money to get an education.
If you take the market and the individual out of the decisions, there's a substantial risk of education becoming a command-economy.

"I'd like to study marine biology, to save the whales."
"No, you're going to welding school, because the Great Leader needs more tanks."

All this would do in a liberal democracy is create a two-tiered system where public funding shunts students into whatever the perceived "societal need" is, in grossly underfunded "free" colleges, while the elites and wealthy get to go fuck off and learn whatever anyway at some school with seventeen swimming pools.

This is what we seem to actually want, though - each administration to immediately "undo" whatever bullshit the last one did, then ramrod its own bullshit agenda, with little regard for how it's accomplished.

If we want to help people, we need to make college more affordable
That's putting a band-aid on the problem. The core problem is that employers have to deal with uncertainty when hiring a new employee. IQ is easily the greatest predictor of job success, but using tests that serve as strong proxies for one's level of intelligence can be a legal minefield. If the government changed the laws in that regard or employers collectively chose to deemphasize the college degree it would take power away from the gatekeepers at universities.

Porque no los dos?

We don't have infinite money. And before you start, I realize the government dumps a lot of money into much worse shit. I don't support that either so don't act like I do.

Government money needs to be better spent in general.

We don't have infinite money.
Money we lent out is digital just like the infinite digital money we give to banks. The only thing that's spent is the money used to run the schools which we're already running either way.

I dont think he ever said he would forgive all student loans

That was just something AOC pushed to get her upper middle class twitter fans excited

Actually it was Elizabeth Warren and Schumer who spearheaded the 10k-50k EO proposal.

Secondly, Biden said he would. There is no misinterpretation or misquote. He literally said he would wipe out loan debt with Congress, and at least 10k/person without Congress via EO.

But here we are lmfao

did these folks HAVE to go to college? I'm sure some will say well they need to just to get a job that pays "well enough" (however much you think that is), but then again, they're not exactly all becoming doctors and city engineers and such now are they...

Let's be real. America doesn't want to make college affordable or free because that would mean they'd lose bodies for their military industrial complex. The military is America's biggest jobs program and most people who join the military do it not because they want to protect the country but because it's their only mean of upward social mobility.

Tbf that supports his point

High costs makes more folks reliant on the GI bill

So more folks enlist in order to get educated
Wouldnt work if school were cheap

Precisely what I'm talking about. They are trading their bodies for their only mean of upward social mobility. If they could get those things without enlisting in the military, do you think they'd still enlist and the military industrial complex be as big as it is?

Probably, because overt bribery for enlistments will have to be replaced with compulsory service like Israel and Switzerland do.
