LBJ was probably the last president to seriously try to improve the welfare of the average American and succeed, but the Vietnam War was a terrible, ill-advised crime against humanity. Truman was pretty decent but also dropped a pair of nukes. People sometimes erroneously cite Carter because he's a good dude on a personal level, but his presidency was basically 100% holier-than-thou "you must sacrifice for the future" pablum.
