Whedon and others involved with the show have gone on the record to say that the movie is not Canon. Only that the some of the broad events took place. (Buffy found out she was the Slayer, Vampires attacked the school, her Watcher died, she burned a gym down).

But specifics regarding how both slayers and vampires operate in the movie clearly violate how they work in the show.

Not to mention Whedon just hates the movie overall.

Kinda. According to one of my exes, whom is a BIG Buffy fan, the original script for the movie (which was later released as a comic) is actually what's canon, not the movie itself.

Semantics, I know...

Eh, kinda, but not quite. The events of the movie are slightly different to what's described in the show (she doesn't burn down the gym in the movie, for example).

The show is clearly meant to follow from something but it's not quite the movie we saw. I vaguely remember something about the show following on from Whedon's original script for the movie rather than the version that the studio eventually put out after some interference, but I don't remember where I read that or how true it is.

I read that as well. IIRC it was in one of the earlier Buffy comics. Might've even been the comic adaptation of Whedon's original script.
