...beyond our reach, based on what's currently known about physics and the universe?

like, even if we could travel at light speed right now, we could never reach them?

I know the universe is impossibly vast, and we wouldn't be able to travel within a single galaxy within a lifetime, but it still makes me kinda sad to think about.

Did you know that if something is 16 billion light years away, the light is actually ~34 billion years old? It's because the universe expands faster than the speed of light, and from the time the light emitted from the galaxy to the point it would have reached us it actually hit the spot we were 16 billion years ago?

The more you know.

All the elements is existence exist on Earth, so we're not missing out on much. The thought of being on another planet is likely more exciting than physically being on one. Planets are nothing but cold and dark, unless there's a light source and animal life forms, then being on another planet would get boring after a few hours.

i just don't understand how anyone in this day and age can still believe that god exists and that he created all of this just for us humans, when modern science has given us the understanding of the almost unimaginable scale and age of the universe. we exist in a volume smaller than a speck of sand in a cosmic beach, and on the scale of the universe's timeline we've been here for less than the blink of an eye. yet somehow this is all for us and always was.

Maybe God told us it's all for us while in reality that cheating bastard is off creating some other species on another planet.

True. I sometimes think of this.

Extremely far in the future, all of the galaxies outside the Local Group would have receded so far away that they would be well outside of the observable universe by then, and all galaxies in the Local Group will eventually collesque into a single mega galaxy. If records are not kept up--or if a species evolves intelligence well after the fact--then they will have absolutely no idea that there are even any other galaxies out there; it will just be one big black void to them.

In fact, eventually the background microwave radiation that's the leftover of the Big Bang will eventually cool enough to be completely undetectable, so they wouldn't even be able to piece together how the Universe even started.

It's a bit humbling, really.

Just convince the pitbulls there are kids out in those galaxies to bite. Then we'll get there.
Just attach all the pibbles to chains in the ground. They will tow the earth at unfathomable speed.

In the year 2029 we will meet alien life. 2 days later the pibbles will make them extinct.
