Hayley Williams is leaving social media.

The Paramore singer revealed to fans in a message on her Instagram that she has made the decision to delete her personal social media accounts.

In a written post on Instagram, Hayleyexplained that shes been thinking about leaving for over a year.

Ive carefully considered this decision for almost a year now. Now I know for sure that my desire to move away from personal accounts (yes, even my finsta) is based on nothing more than my interest in keeping a boundary between a public and a private life and wanting to spend more time looking up and out, rather than down, she wrote.

Hayleyadded, She continued, Ive been on the internet and more specifically, social media, since I was 15. Maybe even younger. It started with the blog sites then MySpace. Then Paramore became a thing and social media wasnt even just for my own personal use anymore but it was part of the job. It has been a useful and mostly beautiful part of the job. I crave connection and the internet is a pretty good tool for that when its not tearing us apart.

No judgement to anyone who loves their social media. Just a huge encouragement to anyone needing permission to create more boundaries and space to grow sometimes no is the kindest thing you can say to anyone! even yourself.

Good for her. Way too many people live on Instagram thinking that that's real life. It's anything but.

Good. Getting rid of my twitter account actually made my mental health 10 times better. I just need to give up CE now ;_;

Are the two really comparable though?

Social media (especially Insta) is primarily there for comparison, which can easily foster feelings of inadequacy. Message boards are more for discussions. Just my take on it.

She should also consider publicly noting that she's the leader of a fake band.

All I know is she stopped playing their most popular song in concert because it said the word "whore" in the lyrics. Even in my emo/punk days I was like, that's just kinda lame. And stopped following the band at that point

That shit isn't healthy by any stretch. Not just because of the time sink and addictive nature in general, but there are so many bad attitudes and unhealthy lifestyle standards going around.

It wasn't just the word whore. It's the whole message of the song, that a woman can be entitled to a man and drag another woman down for it.
Which is still silly bc it's their biggest song and as a fan i'd want to hear it in concert. But w/e.

There's staggering amounts of evidence social media is bad for people's mental health, and these companies are fully aware of it but refuse to do anything about it as the bad gets more engagement.

It absolutely does have good uses though, but the negatives are easily amplified in western countries where freedom of expression, or ability to share information isn't at risk.

In the same way I don't block people.

In the same way I got rid of drinking too much, I just stopped drinking. I can still have a bottle around at all times because I have the self-control not to drink.

Same thing with smoking.

I haven't used my Facebook or Twitter regularly for over a decade, just kind of check in every once in awhile.

I think you're taking the wrong tone, here. She's telling the relevant people (her followers) why she's doing what she's doing.

And it's a good thing to stop posting on social media, so I don't know why you think anybody is expecting you to treat it like a negative thing...?

All in all, that's a weird reaction you just gave.

This is a good point. I had the same thought as deoxxys. But when I step away from Instagram or twitter for a while, I can step back and it's fine. When someone like Hayley Williams steps back, it'll be to hundreds/thousands of unread notifications. They'll be a stir of excitement and maybe news articles if she tweets. "HAYLEY WILLIAMS IS BACK ON TWITTER". etc.
