sauce is important. mean can be, but i don't think it's ever essential. but both only exist to serve the true master -- the cheese.

False topic. And pasta isn't just a sauce delivery vehicle either. Different sauces adhere differently to certain shapes of noodle, making spaghetti with meat sauce or meatballs an entirely different experience than say rigatoni or ziti with meat sauce.

I for one prefer spaghetti (or other long strand noodles) with garlic and olive oil (spaghetti aglio e olio is actually the most popular spaghetti dish in Italy) or with pesto, tube-like noodles like rigatoni or ziti with a marinara sauce with or without meat but preferably with, and flat noodles like fettucine with thick buttery sauces like alfredo.
