I played a little of the original game on PS2 about twenty years ago, and that was it. I never cared for the characters or story. I just played it for the Final Fantasy characters. I think I stopped about the Alice In Wonderland stage.

When I was playing it, it wasn't *too bad* but once I stopped for a month, I completely forgot everything and it all sounds like gibberish >_>

To this day mostly just the large points from KH1, with some of KH2 and Chain of Memories thrown in.

Here is what I thought of the games:

Kingdom Hearts 1 - Loved it when it first came out. Considered it a top 10 game at the time. Played it within the last 5 years again, and thought it held up pretty well for its age, although its not anywhere near a top 10 game for me anymore.

Chain of Memories - Really enjoyable for a GBA card game. I played the 3D remake a few years back, as part of the 1.5 HD remake. It sorta works, although I cant imagine Ill go back to this one again.

Kingdom Hearts 2 - Aside from the very rough opening where you play as Roxas, I loved it. Better than KH1. I tried playing it as part of the 1.5 remake, but this is where I sorta fell off with all of the replays. Just got too sidetracked.

358/2 Days - This one was rough. I played it all the way through when it came out, but it was incredibly repetitive, and the story was fairly dull. The ending at least had some weight to it.

Birth by Sleep - I loved this one when it came out. Between this and FF7:CC, the PSP really impressed me at the time.

Dream Drop Distance - This is where everything fell off the tracks for me. I really didnt like this one, and despite 2-3 tries at the game, Id always lose interest incredibly early into the game like in the 2nd world. Never played another game after this one.

This. I'm good until DDD, but their version of time travel makes no fucking sense. In fact, the entire concept of sleeping worlds didn't make a lot of sense.

Sat through all of them, and they were very entertaining videos but it definitely made me not ever want to play any of the games. What a convoluted mess of a story

I played a few hours of the first game and seen a few random clips from other games. I know a few characters and plot points, but that's about it.

Here's my quick attempt, in spoilers
long ago there was a guy named Master of Masters and he saw the world would end so he got his apprentices to follow their assignment based on a book of prophecies. But he forbig Luxu from seeing it, he had to carry a chest until the chosen time. The apprentices fought amongst each other and caused the great keyblade war. However, there was on keyblade user and apprentices to a MoM apprentice who gathered light and were supposed to rebuild after the war. But one of them was killed. Also the keyblade wielder reincarnated as Xehanort.

Xehanort and his friend were trained to wield keyblades. Unfortunately, Xehanort got told by his time traveling older self to turn to the darkness. So he did. Fast forward a few decades and the two conduct a test with 3 kids to see if any are suitable to become keyblade masters. Only one passes, Aqua. Terra fails because he has darkness in his heart. Ventus wasn't actually a candidate at the time. Lo and behold, Ventus had his darkness ripped out of him. Terra turns to the darkness as he gets corrupted by Master Xehanort. Master Xehanort tries to recreate the keyblade war to open kingdom hearts, but really he just wanted Terra's hot young body. He succeeds and becomes Terranort. Ventus has his heart splintered further and falls into a coma. Aqua locks him up safely then goes to rescue Terra. She fails and falls into the realm of darkness but promises to escape one day.

Terranort lost his memory and got found by Ansem the Wise. He had him join his apprentices in the radiant garden. They practice stuff with hearts. One day Terranort finds an even greater darkness and removes the hearts of apprentices and a few others to create 13 nobodies, while their hearts became heartless. They become organization XIII.

Ventus' heart rang out and merged with Sora. Sora and Riku lived on the destiny islands and wanted to leave one day. Unfortunately, darkness happened because Ansem seeker of darkness (terranorts heartless). Then Sora and Donald and goofy teamed up to try and find king Mickey. They don't, but they do find Riku turned to darkness because of maleficent and later, ansem seeker of darkness. Sora loses his heart for a bit and creates a nobody named Roxas, but Sora comes back. They stop ansem seeker of darkness.

then Sora and crew enter castle Oblivion while Riku wakes up in the basement of it. They fight their way up. Sora loses his memories because of Namine. He beats some Organization goons. Riku escapes with Mickey but turns to darkness to defeat his past darkness... And looks like ansem seeker of darkness. Sora can get his memories back but has to sleep a year.

roxas spends the year making friends then has some bad times and rejoins Sora. Sora finds Riku and riku turns normal again. Sora defeats xemnas (terranorts nobody) and the rest of the organization. But by defeating terranorts nobody and heartless he got to come back, alongside master Xehanort. He had his time traveling past self pick up past selves of him and the rest of the organization to make a new one.

oh, jiminy cricket does stuff with his journal. Data Sora is sad. :'(

eventually you get darkness upon darkness and endless darkness and everyone evil is a Xehanort. Sora rescues literally everyone but Riku who saves himself. Then literally everyone and the xehanorts fight, with Sora winning in the end.

then sora disappears because they want more sequels, err, contrived plot stuff. He fights against a copycat version of him from this other world named Yozora.

kairi also exists, but let's face it when when the devs forget about her you know she's not super important to most of the plot.

KH1, Chain of Memories, and KH2 made for a great trilogy of games. Thankfully they never made any more after that to ruin the franchise.

I know a good 80% of the story which makes me a scholar of the series I guess. I don't keep up with the shifty mobile games

So Master of Masters (MoM) is supposedly from an entirely different Worldline (think alternate dimension/Universe) and has this conflict with an entity called Darkness who essentially destroyed his world and everyone he knew. So MoM somehow travels to a new Worldline as he builds up this grand plan to destroy Darkness for good. He eventually takes on 6 disciples the Foretellers/Union Leaders.

He gives each of them a Tome of Prophecy except Luxu who he entrusts with another task. In 4 of the Tomes he removes a page that tells of a traitor amongst them. The Foreteller with the missing page is tasked with finding this traitor. Shortly after MoM disappears leaving the Foretellers to essentially turn on each other which causes the Keyblade War which destroys the world.

One of the Foretellers trains a bunch of Keyblade Wielders herself forming a group called the Dandelions which is basically the last hope there is. Eventually the Keyblade War reaches its climax and nearly all the Keyblade Wielders are killed.

Come to find out, this world is a data world so the surviving Wielders have to escape the Data World to survive. Marluxia and Larxenes original selves are some of the survivors and are successfully sent to the real world. Another survivor called Brain is met by Luxu who transfers his heart into Brain.

While this is going on your player character and two other Wielders are ambushed by Darkness, which isn't a singular entity but multiple. Your character is seemingly possessed by Darkness and attacks the other two Wielders. Turns out this was all a trap and several of the Darknesses are trapped in a pathway with the Player Character while the other two escape. Player Character dies and reincarnated as Xehanort.

Meanwhile Luxu watches the destruction of the world.

An undetermined time later Brain wakes up in Scala Ad Caelum and is met by some robed hooded figure with a hat on named Sigurd, they talk and yadda yadda.

After that it's pretty much the games.

I understand 90% of the plot, besides some stuff from KH3 onwards since it's where I clocked out.

They really just retcon whatever they want for new plot ideas, so keeping tracking of older lore is mostly pointless these days.
