First, there was hydroxychloroquine. The latest fad was Ivermectin, the horse dewormer. In todays What will they think of next? antivaxxers have taken to gargling with and ingesting Betadine to prevent Covid. Betadine is the brand name for povidone iodine, a commonly used antiseptic for cleaning skin and wounds and also used occasionally as a douche. A 0.5 % solution is sold as a gargle for sore throats, with a caution, DO NOT SWALLOW. The typical bottle of antiseptic sold for skin cleaning is a 10% solution.

For example, this 2020 study found Listerine, Iso-Betadine, and Dequonal mouthwashes to be effective against three strains of SARS-CoV-2, but this was in tissue cultures. In that study, Both Povidone iodine and Peroxal caused significant skin cell death in our studies, while both Listerine and Chlorhexidine had minimal skin cell killing at concentrations that simulated what would be found in daily use," according to Daniel Fine, the papers senior author. While studies such as these are encouraging, even the Listerine manufacturer notes that the data is not sufficient to make any recommendation for its use in fighting Covid.

I actually like using Betadine (as a throat gargle) when I feel a cold coming on so hopefully this doesn't make it hard to buy.

Of course they wouldn't gargle Listerine which is already diluted to a "safe" concentration, they'll use the iodine with the fancy name that they have to dilute themselves and I guarantee hundreds will do the whole "if I double or triple the mix it ill be twice/three times as effective" thought process.

It's not quite that simple, as there's more than one or two layers to that issue. Many people fall under the same overall umbrella, but believe in different things or have slightly differing opinions.

I wish plant-based solutions got more mainstream attention, though. Everytime I bring up or link the BMJ study, for example, people interpret it as something like propaganda, or downplaying natural remedies that work just as well as Western medicine, if not better. Stuff like ginger working just as well as aspirin and ibuprofen for migraines and menstrual cramps, or green tea being a potent antimicrobial in an ongoing era of worsening antibiotic-resistant super bugs and pathogens.

From what I have seen it definitely is not more effective then a vaccine, nor is there proof of it being effective right now, but it was prescribed to people billions of times before COVID was even a thing.

Yes, it was prescribed as an anti-parasite drug for stuff like lice. It was never prescribed or recommended as an anti-viral. Also, people are literally going to feed stores and getting ivermectin in a form that is meant for horses and other livestock.

This is just too funny like these dingbats will do anything. I literally saw a group of people with red hats and American flag tee shirts on drinking this stuff at the grocery store at the time I didn't know what they were doing because I wanted to get away from them. But now after reading this article it all makes sense.

They bought all of it and had a full grocery cart of it along with bags of potatoe chips because they obviously don't care about their health. When I left I saw a line of pick up trucks in the parking lot obviously theirs.
