They're both Nicks! Sega of America chose to localize Eggman as "Robotnik" to make his name sound similar to Sonic. Mind = blown.

So is Robotnik; it's Polish for "worker". But the character Eggman was first localized as Robotnik, and then the robots were localized as Badniks to go with that.

He resembles a walrus like the Beatles song imagery and it may be that theres a tiny bit of Doc Ock somewhere in there.

lots of Nintendo & Disney influence in Sonics design

Otto Octavius , the sunglasses , the time frame , the robots , the stupid outfit , the weird mobility , idk..... Its possible theyre just coincidentally similar tho or share some other common denominator. Game development can be weird. If you start making your game first, but someone catches wind of what youre doing, and then they announce and released their rip-off of your game before your game ever comes out/is announced.... then it can potentially look like youre the one who stole their idea, when its actually the other way around. Haha!
