Just eat less. Putting on mass especially muscle is much harder.

Correct. At a base level achieving weight loss is simple.

Now throw in the human element and all hell breaks loose.

Both are easy when you simplify it like that but I personally find losing weight is significantly more mentally difficult. Less energy due to less food, eating only certain types of food, weight in the gym goes down since you're losing weight on your body, etc. Whereas gaining weight is like lol put more food in mouth.

If you're going for the bare minimum of losing weight... sure. But it's easier said then done. I've seen friends who half assed their "keto" diet and end up gaining more weight than losing it.

The real hard truth about losing weight is that the main reason you gain weight from the start is because of something in your lifestyle that is causing it, whether it is living a sedentary lifestyle, over eating, refusal to do any form of physical activity, etc. Losing weight, optimally, requires change which is something very hard to do since we're all creatures of habits.

It's harder for women than men for sure.

As for building muscle mass genetics plays a factor, it's easy for some guys and hard for others. I'm blessed and put on muscle pretty easy with an average weight routine and normal diet. I've never once taken protein or anything like that.

Just eat less.

True enough, but that doesn't mean it's easy. It's simple but that isn't the same thing.

If you're talking about mostly built-up muscle mass, yeah, no doubt, it's pretty goddamn easy if you want to lose a significant amount of weight. But if you're talking a bulk mass of fat that you're trying to lose, you're going to need a massive diet change long term for possibly years. People can do that for a couple of weeks. But as time goes on, you'll see an increasing failure rate. To get off that last bit of fat that separates a truly fit person from average body type is definitely the toughest part though.
