I've never played this or any of those Souls games. I've heard this game has a good dark atmosphere so I figured why not.

Dump your first couple of levels into VIT and just go from there, look at the stats required for your weapon and if theres an alphabetical value you may wanna consider putting some levels into that.. you can get some health back from immediately striking back if you can dodge after the hit.

You can get pretty far with the saw blade tbh also a lot of bosses benefit from to the side of them instead of into them, youll just have to try and see what works

Dont bother with blocking or using a shield

It's best we don't tell you anything. A fresh, blind playthrough is exactly what you should do, it's the best way to enjoy these games. If I had to give you any non-spoilery tips:

Experiment with different weapons, they're all enjoyable for someone, and early weapon upgrade materials are plentiful in the mid-game. Any weapon can be used for the whole game, so just find one you like. (My favorites are the Kirkhammer, Hunter Axe, and Reiterpallasch, and burial blade)

Be okay with dying and losing your echoes, it happens, you'll get them back. Even losing them permanently by dying before you retrieve them is okay, it happens and there will always be more.

Work on parrying with the gun. It'll always be worth it to parry an enemy, given the opportunity. Very seldom is it better to attack after a parry than it is to do a visceral attack.

If you're frustrated, take a break. You'll come back fresh and less impatient.
