not tipping could potentially motivate them to get a better job too

People are so angry that they feel obligated to tip someone who serves them; moreover, that gratuity would simply appear somewhere else on your check its really annoying how many people dont understand extremely simple stuff like that.

Even if technically optional, the consensus of society still says it is very much compulsory. So until tipping is eliminated, you better give them a fair tip (more than 15% at the very least) where it is expected. Don't be a Mr. Pink.

Except they are still entitled to receive additional compensation from their employer to bring up their weekly pay to at least minimum wage if they don't get enough tips.

I'm not American and I do tip, so please calm down the hostility.

However, if the whole of the US suddenly stopped tipping it would likely be awful in the short term but better in the long term.

Look at it like this, if servers had the same minimum wage as everyone else, prices would go up at least 20%.

Honestly, I agree. Its saying that the business doesnt want to pay its customers, so the customer should pick up the slack. Now you catch shade if you dont leave a massive tip. The prices for everything have gone up so much that you paying 20% is you paying a lot more than you used to.

The customer should not be responsible for paying the workers. The thing that burns me up is delivery fees that dont go to the delivery driver. The companies make them use their own gas and put wear and tear on their car, but the $3 delivery fee for every order goes directly to corporate. Then people dont tip because they assume the $3 is a forced tip. This is happening because corporate is cheap and greedy and they want all profits to go to the top.

Owners still have to pay minimum wage if the server doesn't make enough tips for at least that amount on a shift. Also, if you ask just about any server they prefer the tip system over a static wage despite the filthy stiffers because they still make far more money per hour than hourly wages.

Therefore by being anti-tip you are being anti-worker because removing tips hurts them the most, way more than owners who would just raise the price of meals to compensate and way more than cheapskate customers who come up with any excuse not to tip. Then they'll bitch about how much food costs even though they don't have to tip anymore.

But I think the culture around transactions of any kind is very different for me from the American way of doing things. The idea that shops add tax on when you get to the till seems bonkers, but you're all used to it.

The cost is clear, assuming you can multiply by .2, that is.

Until the employer finds a reason to fire said employee because they constantly arent getting tips and the employer has to spend more to have that worker.

Not agreeing with that, because its fucking dumb, but some employers think this way.

The system is garbage though and designed that way so money goes up, not down. Fuck Reagan and trickle down economics.

I mean; if everyone just stopped tipping a great server, management will look at the bottom line, see that the server is costing more than all their other servers without a huge change to the bottom line (ie: that worker doesnt bring in the amount of money that theyre costing the employer), that server will likely get fired.

Id much rather everyone be paid a livable wage and that tipping is for good service so this isnt an issue, but the powers that be dont want this.

Servers don't either, the vast majority of them love the tip system. Average servers can easily clear hundreds on weekend nights.

Tipping is bullshit because employers get a way to pay less than minimum wage. What if business slows down through no fault of your own? You're just fucked until if/when it picks back up. You can say well then they can just work at a different place if the business goes down, come on man, no employer wants to see you hopping from place to place. You're just telling them that you won't stick around.

It's pretty unacceptable to me for someone working full-time to not know if they'll be able to pay their Bill's next month or not. Tips should be a bonus for a job well done, not the main source of income.

Yeah, thats why I specified a livable wage. Servers would still clear more than min wage and tips would be an added bonus for good service.
