I didnt witness this but heard my brother scream when this happened and i questioned him about it. About 8 hours ago my brother decided to carry my dog (4 year old pomeranian) down the stairs in a half jog pace so the dog freaked out and kicked off his chest. My bro said he landed on "his side" rather than his feet which made me cringe but at least he didnt land on his head. Id say the drop was about 7 ft minimum since my bro is 6'2 tall and his chest level should be about 5 feet off the ground. The stairs add an extra 2 feet and some inches assuming 7 inch per step. My bro said he was on the 4th step from the bottom when the incident happened.

My dog's behaviour seems normal. He is still jumping on and off the couch and does his beggar's dance for food. I made sure to apply pressure around his body to see if he'll yelp in pain but fortunately there is no such reaction. I even walked him today for about 30 mins and his gait is normal. Is there anything else i should be wary of?

Also he does have to be carried down the stairs because he slid down from the top about 3 years ago. He didnt seem physically hurt by that either but he does avoid going down uncarpeted steps these days.

Also yeah im kinda mad at my bro for being so careless.

Has your pet ever fallen off something similar and was ok? I just want reassurance because its been on my mind for the past couple of hours.

Dogs can be pretty durable, probably wouldn't hurt to get some x-rays though

Honestly it's probably better he landed on his side than his feet. Could have easily broken a bone in it's leg. They aren't cats after all.

dogs are durable but they're also dumb. specifically a small dog like a pomeranian. they might not even realize they're in pain or that something is amiss, especially when they're still active and focused on other things like food. monitor it overnight to check its breathing, give it a thorough feel over make sure it doesn't have any odd bumps, and make sure it doesn't get sluggish at abnormal times

should be fine but keep an extra eye on it. maybe check on it once at like 3am just to make sure

Dogs are like small children.

Theyre already so close to the floor that their heads cant achieve terminal velocity. So the thunk you hear just sounds way worse than it is.

Yeah their overall lesser weight and bodily structure probably means their fall probably wasn't dangerous as it would be for an adult weight human falling 2-3 times their length. But my dog once sprained her legs off what seemed like a light stumble down a single step, otherwise was completely fine when she did something similar when somebody picked her up.

Poms are small enough that a 8 foot drop probably won't hurt them seriously but I wouldn't make a habit of that.

I remember my dwarf hamster jumped off the two story balcony twice onto the hard wood floor.

I was so scared he was paralyzed for life :( But the lil guy was just stunned and lived out the rest of his short little hamster life.

I want another one but my heart cant stand to bury another one since they only live 3-5 years :(

Thanks for all the responses guys/gals. My dog has been acting normal the past 3 days now. Its like he never took a fall. My brother later told me that he mightve been on the 3rd step before the dog jumped so maybe the fall wasnt as high as i thought. He also said that after my dog landed on his side he just quickly got up aswell.

Just wanted to make sure he was ok for a few days before updating.. If i dont ever update this again it means he ok.

I would call the vet and ask them their thoughts to be on the safe side. Internal injury does not always appear right away but does not mean it is not there.
