Depends on the car, but would you rather spend between $500 and $1500 on a transmission or $30k on a new casr

If you drive on the highway or through risky urban areas, your need for a reliable car is greater that someone else's.

Then again having good road insurance may be all that you need.

Really depends on the car I need to fix and what I'd buy otherwise/if I wanted a new car anyway/how much could I potentially get in trade

15k is still less than a new transmission. As it stands, he won't be able to sell his current car for anything close to the value, so he'll be losing more money overall. Is the current car in good condition otherwise? 100k isn't that many miles on the clock...unless you're one of those people who bought into the 100k miles = better sell it racket that car dealerships try to promote to boost sales

OP what's your car

There are no easy answers to this question, gonna have to be up to you to weigh the pros and cons but personally I would just go for a $15k used car. Also consider the value of the car itself, if you spend $1500 on a new transmission and the car is only worth like $3k or $4k, that's additional data you may want to consider

You have zero idea about what you're talking about. Unless you're talking about a higher end car getting the work done at a dealership, you're vastly overestimating the cost. A rebuilt transmission for my jeep is around $800, with 7-8 hours of labor going into it at a shop if you don't wanna do it yourself.

Eben if they charge something insane and unheard of like 500 an hour for labour you're still looking at half of 15k though.....

Exactly. Most shops in my area charge between $100 and $125 an hour for labor, so lets call it $1700 to replace the transmission if I wanted to drop it off at a shop and not worry about anything.
