Not necessarily. Those are m.2

They can go through SATA. The ones that connect directly to the motherboard are called nVME

TBH I've seen these in laptops about 4-5 years ago. I'm just amazed SSDs are small little chipsets.

They were always that small. The 2.5" casings are 90% empty air.
