Amnesia is a great game, though, because it does involve actual gameplay. Less so for the sheer trial and error of outlast

Resident Evil 2 had a nice balance where you technically *can* fight back, but it's a terrible idea

Subnautica had the perfect balance for me. You can't really fight back (the cost of materials to do so is more work than it's worth), but you can build tools to defend yourself.

The problem isn't that the genre is bad. It's that most devs are bad at enemy AI. You either end up with something like Outlast where (on the default difficulty) you can always take a hit and run into a crawl space, or you end up with something Amnesia where it's just waiting for fixed patterns to loop so you can find the gap.

Alien: Isolation is like the gold standard for how that style of horror can work, but that's way more effort than most devs are willing or able to put in.

Re2 is terrible and I cannot understand how it got good reviews. Zombies take unfathomable amounts of bullets to kill, so like you said there is zero reason to actually fight them.. So the entire game is literally just wandering convoluted buildings, getting lost, backtracking, wondering where the fuck to go. How the fuck is that fun for anyone?

this, fighting back makes it an action game. you can give the player the ability to fight back, but it needs to be a choice of last resort otherwise you're undermining the whole point.

Imagine complaining about getting lost in RE2 when its map is easily the most helpful in the series.

my issues with them are the trial and error based loop. its annoying to repeat shit like that and takes me out of the atmosphere.

I think the point is never to epically pwn the monsters, it's to feel totally defenseless from them.

Like imagine the "horror" game where you can just level up until you can beat the eldritch horrors with ease. That's just Dark Souls bruh.

Can only speak for me, but as far as obscure gimmicky puzzles I really found RE2 one of the easier ones and I didn't need a guide for it. That could be because I played the remake and the map made it super easy. Like if there was a room you haven't fully pilfered then it's still red. That simplified everything.

I'm not trying to be a "git gud" guy honestly. I found myself glued to a guide for Hollow Knight because fuck spending 3 hours backtracking to find an obscure item. Maybe it just didn't work for you for whatever reason.

May give RE8 a go because they'res is far less annoying from what i hear.

Alien Isolation did this the best imo. You can never beat the alien monster, who is a constant threat, but you can do stuff like pay attention to its sound going through the air pipes. Essentially the AI wasn't some simple thing you can manipulate.

It also handled fighting it the best, because as the game goes on you CAN fend it off, but you can never really fight it.

I like how the alien adapts too like you can flamethrower it throughout and it'll actually start backing off if you just have it equipped and looking at it

Will never understand why people want more of these. Every modern attempt (NightCry, ReMothered) has bottom tier horror, less-than-bottom tier gameplay.

At least Outlast's parkour made for some exciting chase sequences.

I think Little Nightmares did this okay. Unlike some of the other games mentioned here, it makes sense that the character can't fight back since every enemy is giant (or a poisonous creature).

Even in the DLC when they add a "defense" element to it, it's extremely limited and doesn't take away from the creepiness factor. I'd argue it adds to it.

This. I feel attitudes like TC's is less about horror, but more like wanting a typical adventure video game with a horror setting.

Meanwhile, sections where you can only run and hide are scary even in family friendly games like Hat in Time.

I wouldn't say bad but I prefer ones with some degree of action.

Outlasts main mistake was length. Probably should've been like 30% shorter for its type of gameplay.

Agreed. The Metroid games that have sections where you are powerless against the enemy (such as Zero Mission and Fusion) are some of the most memorable sections in those games. They can be fun when incorporated right.
